windscreen protecting film

Ordering my 4rth replacement glass for my '19 ED 1. Anyone have any experience with either Exoshield or Madico protection film? The angle of this glass continues to take direct hits on the slabs here in Texas and the splits quickly. Any advise is appreciated.

Wow. Have you been able to use safelite at all or do you have to get the replacement done each time at the dealer?

I have exoshield and so far 500 miles in I got a chip because of a small rock. Was not a loud bang but still made a mark. The installer told me the chip is in the exoshield, not in the glass and when there are enough chips that the exoshield can be replaced.

it was about $500 to install and I paid an extra $250 for their warranty which covers a cracked windshield up to $3,000 value.

I have no issues with clarity. Sometimes the wiper chatters but I don’t know if that’s due to the exoshield since I had it from basically day one.

Thanks for that. Looking for an exoshield supplier around me.

EXOSHIELD: A good installer, like the wrap is the key. The product is high quality and does work.

Good hunting for your local installer.

Regards

Jerry

I have Clearplex installed on my windshield. That's probably the first thing I did when my car arrived. So far I have no complaints. Talked to a few installers in my area, and most of those prefer Clearplex over Exoshield. IDK but having either one of them is better than nothing at all.

There are several threads on the topic here in the this forum, and other forums here as well but you basically have 2 choices. Personally, I can tell there is a film on a windshield so I will replace as needed.

I have clear plex on the windshield. They did it at the same time at my Stek ppf film on my car. The only issue I am concerned with is even with the coating you apply to it like rain ex it still makes the wiper blades cause that horrible sound and skip on the windshield. Not sure if there is any way around it. I’d be curious how it handles in any snow type areas.

clearplex on mine. 3 small cracks in film, window untouched... btw, most installers by me are dropping exoshield for clearplex

Just spoke with the Clearplex manufacturer who is indicating that clearplex is only for warm climate. The product will crack or easily scratch if wiper blades freeze. And yet have spoken to installers in my market (Philadelphia) who are indicating that they do install on vehicles in this area. It seems that windshield protection is an individual choice based upon driving and climate variables. I'm still a bit torn about whether it makes sense to apply on a DD in potentially cold winters and very little highway driving.

Vendor prefence boils down to which product the installer is willing to inventory and is experienced in installing.

I have zero deductible windshield coverage and still getting exoshield (along with some other upgrades) tomorrow.

I chipped my windshield 2 days after taking delivery.

I would rather pay for the exoshield than deal with trying to source a windshield and someone who can install it. (I am about 6hrs from the closest Mercedes dealership)

i have zero deductible as well... that said, too many windshield claim and insurance will drop you or even increase the rate... claim is a claim. I got clearplex immediately especially with bad east coast weather/roads.

I'm considering Clearplex in Colorado. I'm debating if it's worth the distortion/hassle. A local Exoshield installer told me they probably wouldn't bother with it because I'd likely have to replace it annually. I found an Clearplex installer that will do it for $325 so maybe it's worth a shot.

there is no distortion or hassle. i am now getting clearplex on my supercars before summer. very happy with it on my G63. I will replace it maybe in another year as it blocked a couple of rocks though it cracked clearplex. we pay about $700 in NJ

I am very OCD, and I struggled with the idea of having anything applied to my windshield. Any distortion would be unacceptable. I decided to try Clearplex on my Ferraris a few years ago. I haven't noticed any distortion at all. Yes, I know there's film on the windshield, but no distortion. I had ClearPlex installed on my 2020 G 63 before I drove it off the lot.

I haven't had anything hit the windshield (yet), but I'm sure it will help if/when I get hit by typical road debris. My installer in Utah charged $300 for the G 63 (I bet it's $500+ in California). Although I'm hoping the Clearplex will last for years, I'd happily pay to have it applied annually if it helps me avoid the time and hassle of replacing the windshield

BTW, I can't imagine NOT having Clearplex (or equivalent) on my windshields.

BobZ, I bet Clearplex is only $300 or so in Florida. Try it. I bet you'll like it.

I might...$450 was the best price I could find last year but it might be worth a try.

Hi Bob. I know you are very detail-oriented, and you care about doing things right. It shows in all of the help and advise you give on this forum (much appreciated, BTW). Even at $450 (still cheaper than California) Clearplex is worth it. You won't regret it...I hope. LOL.

Just had ExoShield installed. The clarity is great. Looking forward to seeing how it protects from rock damage. I had 2 windshields broken in the 2019. Didn’t want to go through that again in the 2021.

No, the claim did not increase my insurance rate but I'm quite confident if the trend continued, the company would cancel my insurance. Also going forward, I do have the 2 year warranty from ExoShield for up to $3,000 in case of breakage.

Reporting back the same findings as others. Zero blur, distortion, etc... Unless I was on the exterior of the vehicle looking at the edges of the windshield (closely), you would never know.

Haven’t had a chance to try it in the rain, shop told me try not to use the wipers (if possible) if there is a ton of mud, stones, etc...on the windshield, as it can scratch the Exoshield.

I know it will be a few years before I drop it in a mud hole, so I am good for a while.

bad news

I'm sorry to report that ClearPlex didn't protect my windshield from a routine rock incident on Interstate 80 near Salt Lake City. My enthusiasm for this product has diminished considerably

I'm doing an 800 mile r/t road trip next month, and plan to stay off the interstates entirely. Too many bubbas with jacked up suspensions and 500mm wheel spacers on 42" tires who think breaking windshields is a competition.

Exoshield has been great for me. I have had my 21 G63 for 4 months now and have put over 3500 miles on it with lots of highway driving and not one issue with the windshield. Well worth the $300 cost.
