2020 g63 owner bought a 2021 Jeep rubicon 392

Hey G wagon folks...After @ 6 months of waiting for a 2021 Jeep Rubicon 392...I have received it...If you love your g63...I cannot imagine you wouldn’t love the rubicon 392....I’ve put @ 700 miles on it.....no complaints...the transmission is much better than the Mercedes unit...I believe it uses the ZF 8 Speed....I just added 35 inch toyo open country atiii’s and the driving experience is everything I hoped for....At 78K , many people said it was a way overpriced jeep rubicon....I think its a pretty good value for a v8 Jeep rubicon ...I would buy it again...it is also much more comfortable to drive with 5 ppl aboard with baby .....nice job jeep...love my g63...but this one has really impressed me....naturally aspirated v8 sounds glorious with factory performance exhaust....




The tire shop placed my vehicle on the blue lines of the handicapped space...not me...I promptly moved my vehicle .....cheers

Congrats—great stable. I saw Jeep dealers were doing $5k ADM on the v8s.

Hard to wrap my head around a Wrangler costing $80k though!

I just FCA to put that engine in their 1500 RAM. At least give me something in between 5.7 hemi and the TRX.

A real beast that beats the G's EPA fuel inefficiency by 1 mpg less (but no winch as SE?). Might consider one after the buying surge. My 2016 Rubicon has proved itself a great vehicle throughout 5 years and 40K miles.

How’s the steering on it? I just got rid of my Gladiator. Was the worst driving experience of any modern vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’ve had 4 Jeep wranglers prior and none were as bad. I even adjusted the steering box myself and it stayed in adjustment for about a month then the problems started again.
I’m reluctant to purchase another new Jeep at this point.

The steering is quite good and ride compliance is very plush....it is a live axel so I would compare steering feel to the previous gen g63 I had for a number of years.....Even with 35 tires ..it is very comfortable and easy to drive.....I have the sky roof so freeway self imposed limiter is @ 75mph....I have let a few people drive it...off road shops and friends,....we all agreed Jeep did a great job on this model....I was getting ready to do a defender restomod....that was looking to be @ 150K....I drove one and I just knew I couldn’t live with it long-term.....I really enjoy driving the 392....gas tank is very small...like 200 mile range small....mileage is @ 12mpg...just about the same as my 2016 g63.

Did you do a lift to clear the 35s, or is that factory height? Looks good. I got a TRX and it's ridiculosly fun. That Rubicon is definitely tempting for a fun SUV though.

The factory did a 2 inch lift...the 35’s easily clear ....On of the Jeep reps I spoke with said that they designed it to use 35...but last minute corporate decision to sell to the public with 33’s...the open country at iii’s ride exceptionally well...I’ve always have BFG’s but these tires check all the boxes..

Congratulations! I think the 33 choice was purely for mpg numbers. You are right, the jeep was developed with 35.

I hear ya...I was on the fence when it arrived....then I drove it...and fell in love....I rationalized it as a much more affordable defender 110 resto....I have put over 1,000 miles on it and I have zero complaints...the throttle is a little slow but that’s a Jeep and it’s an easy fix with pedal commander....I have been added some armor and lights over the past few weeks and I am really enjoying this vehicle ....me, the wife, three boys (one toddler @ 9 months old and a 12 year retriever did some fire roads (saddleback mtn) last week....it handled everything without a single issue...and in total comfort....love the sky roof ....much easier than taking panels off/on...hopefully it doesn’t create rattles and issues down the road....For $74K....I cannot build a bronco (old gen) or defender for anywhere close to that price ...and this vehicle is completely sorted out mechanically ....and that exhaust and engine are perfect....okay...one complaint ...small gas tank and 11mpg.....my g63 does better on mpg...lol

Would you mind getting an overall height measurement of your Jeep for me? Throwing around the idea of getting one and want to see if it will fit in the garage at the gym with the 2" lift and 37s. I realize yours is on 35s, but I can just add an inch or so to that measurement. Thanks.

Yes, ‘there is a reason,’ and it's a very good one!

Jeep engineers these vehicles for serious off-road use, where sidewall height is king, particularly over rough terrain, big rocks, etc. Low profile tires are exactly the opposite of what you need for aggressive off-road use. Believe you me, my BFG 37x12.50R17’s Krawler sidewall size is king of the road awesome when I traverse over the very worst of tore-up, washed-out, gully and hole laden US Forest Service roads, whilst on my way up to various mountaintop repeaters in my Jeeo Gladiator. The last darn thing I want out there would be some low profile tires!

Also, there are off-road conditions where you want to air-down your tires to as much as 50% of normal (hence the wheel bead-locks and on-board air compressor) to improve traction and minimize tread damage. Doing this on a 22" low profile tire will leave you riding on the rims (but they might already be trashed by the time you need to air-down).

Exactly, which is why I have 2 sets of 5 rims, mounted with anything-but-low-profile-tires, one set of 5 being Black Rhino 17 inch bead lockers, which is what my 37 inch Krawlers are mounted on, along with an air compressir in the Gladiator’s bed. I usually air down to 4 or 5 PSI if and when the going gets really rough, and rear air ‘em back up at the bottom of the hill. Funny thing is, I ain’t never seen a G63 whilst traversing these roads, not even a G550. LOL

Its 79 inches with the Sky roof open. The sky roof adds @3.5 inches when open(the cloth roof bunches up at the rear of the vehicle when open.
When sky roof is closed it is @76 inches.

Thanks! That should leave plenty of clearance even on 37s. Do you have any rubbing with the 35s and the 2" lift. Do you think 37s would fit with the 2" lift?

If you search on youtube there's a guy who no-mods put 37s on his rubicon 392 and they test it for rubbing and get none. So looks like 37s are safe (unless you go crazy wide)

Starting to see more 392s available at msrp. Because i'm not willing to pay an insane markup on the G63 I may pick one of these up to tide me over for a year or so. Leave the top off and it would be a blast.

I have zero rubbing with the 35’s…..37’s on city streets and fire roads …probably okay…..I would try it first before scrapping the factory lift

I would get the 2021-22 recon 392…it has 35 inch tires and (most importantly , a different rear-end). …which is a good thing if you are going to do 37’s….check out jeep 392 recon package ….If you live in SoCal …I’m pretty sure I can get you an order at MSRP ….I have almost 7,000 miles on mine now….love it!!! Zero issues.
