I thought the 55k engine was going away for emissions reasons or something? Or is that next year?

We heard that 05 was supposed to be the last year for the G all together for the US. Reasons were not clearly stated for continuing the G in the US after all.

There were some 2006 G55's and the 2007 is limited to 150 units for the US.

They have about $107k reasons to keep selling them. Actually I think that's a decrease in price? I bought my '05 new and it seemed like it was a few thousand more then that; they probably have a huge margin on these.

Absolutely, the equipment used to stamp out the panels for a G and I have something in common. We were both products of the early 70's. The lifespan of this truck is amazing.

............yes, the 2007 G55 will have 500 crank HP. All the AMGV8 cars including 2003-2005 cars actually have 500 crank HP from factory despite the marketing hype. In the 2007 G55 the ECU was flashed by the factory to give the reported 500 crank HP. Realize that in a 4wheel drive car this is less than 20 additional HP to the wheels. 20 additional HP in a 6000LB car will not make any difference. So this is not a major selling point. Besides, many AMGV8K owners already have close to 500HP to the wheels with simple mods. The interesting thing to me is how easily these newer cars can be be modified given that Mb is going out of their way to prevent aftermarket ECU modifications.

I am reading conflicting information regarding 1st release G's. Do you know if all 2007 U.S. G's (early & later release) will have ALL of the updates? By ALL I mean instrument cluster, rear tail lights, steering wheel, etc. I understand the center stack should be current but want to make sure all others are done to the "early release G". Please let me know if you have any concrete info on this. Different forums have conflicting info.

You'd be making a mistake IMO. The 55 kompressor engine is much better suited for the G.

And the 63 will be much less likely to be as tunable with all the new emissions crap if you want to go aftermarket for more power.

The extra torque is a bonus, but the 6.3 motor paired with the 7-speed gearbox gives you more control in off-road situations. Second gear is way to tall on the 5-speed.

Anyone who's going to use the G-series off road in situations where that would truly matter is not likely to be using the G55, the regular G500 without the side exit exhaust and G55's suspension would be much more appropriate. Doesn't the G55 have shorter gearing too for acceleration?

The regular G500 has side exhaust as well....just not out as far with the chrome tips.

If AMG didnt think this motor was better than the 55k, They wouldnt have released it until it was. AMG has never gone backwards. But, To each their own, But I personally would prefer a G63 over G55

The engine might be better from a overall standpoint, but the 6.2L doesn't have the torque to move the G like the 5.5L SC engine does. A high-reving engine in a heavy truck like the G doesn't make much sense and off roading it will make even less since you've to rev it to get the torque, compared to the 5.5L SC V8.

20+ to list......
Agreed 100%, if you want a heavy piece of object getting out of a hole, you need torque, not hp. G63 is not going to be better than the G55, if not worse, I just can't see a high revving V8 in a G class, it's like fitting a Type-R motor in a Honda Pilot, interesting to see, but pretty pointless.

550 engine...

i agree that the less efficient but much more torquey 55k is better suited for the G, if only because i was told so in germany at hockenheim.

in the non-AMG model, wouldn't the new 550 engine be a great improvement of the current 500 engine?

Yep a G550 would be great. It might come along when the ML550 and R550 arrive in July (supposedly according to dealer).

absolutely spot on mate ! you need low down grunt when youre off roading , thats why all the prover off-road cars (defenders, land rovers) have diesel engine... having a high-revving engine would confine an amazing off-roader to the city streets !!!
