g55 rear headrests

g55 rear headrests
I picked up my 2010 g55 last night blk on blk. With the rear headrests in the extended position it is quite hard to see out of the back. So I wanted to lower them. Problem is I had 3 sales people and 4 service technicians trying to figure out how to do that and after an hour nobody could figure it out. The manual says simply pull hard but they don't budge and feel as if there must be a release someplace which we could not find. I had to lower the rear seats so I could see on the drive home. Anybody here now what the method is here to moving the headrest up and down ? Thanks in advance.

They typically will not fit flush with the top of the seat.
I find regardless of position the spare tire is what obstructs the rear vision along with the window tinting.
Congrats on your purchase

g55
so far I like it. If it was my only car and daily driver I would much prefer a 2010 RR SC. But my daily is an s63 and I think this is a perfect pair. Only 75 miles so far so it's early. Love looking at it though

I removed them, since they partially block the view, and are in the way when you fold down the seat
You posted the 2010 was not worth the extra money ... Did the Price change, or your opinion change?

Yes I dont think the 2010 is worth the extra money. But by the time I made up my mid that I wanted to trade my cayenne for a G55 the last 09 I was aware of in blk was sold. If I could of bought it I would of saved over 12k and I would of.

g55 headrests
I went to a second dealer yday and they had 5 techs try the headrests and still no luck. The first dealer called me back and said they think that despite the notches in the rear headrests they are not actually adjustable, they are either in or out. Can somebody confirm this is correct. (this still does not help me since I cant actually get them out )

g55 headrests
had to remove the back of the seats. there is a pin that locks over the tube that holds the headrests in place. Had to pry open the pin with a screw driver to remove them. only then to find that the headrests bars are covered on double sided tape so there was no way to remove it from the inside of the tube. pretty stupid design. other than that I like the truck so far, I think. although even though I expected it to be rough I will say it is even a little rougher than I imagined.

That is a change ... the previous G's you can not fully fold down the back of the seat without removing the Headrest
The G has the 2 seat/1 seat fold down for skis ... you just fold down the 1 seat side ... and then the skis are not in the middle of the storage area
P.S. the people who post it is not a rough ride ... must live where there are no potholes or cobblestone

Same issue
Just picked up 2010 G55 and am having the exact same issue. Who removed the back of the seats? You or dealer? Once fixed do the headrests operate normally? Or do you have to remove the seat back for all adjustments?

2013 G 63 AMG
My 2002 and 2004 G-wagens both required the center headrest to be removed in order to fold down the back seat, so from my point of view this is an improvement. I'll try removing one of mine tonight to see if there's any difference between the US and ROW versions of the 2010 G-Class.

Took my 2010 G55 to Mercedes Benz of Manhattan last week because of this issue and explained to them what nyc123 mentioned (to remove the back of the seats)... What I got after a day at the service "Sorry, can't be done on 2010"
I guess I will have to do it myself at some point.

Having the same issue here with a 2009 G500. No one knows how to adjust the rear headrests. Im going to try to push and pull method. If not the other way is removing the back of the seat?

So I went to the dealer and they removed the back of the seat. This is what we saw:
This is the top down view. MB has a really bad design here that makes no sense. There is a welded piece at the bottom that cannot be removed, and therefore, the headrests can go no lower than what is the base position. The clip is wedged around that pole and sits in a fixed position. So to move and fix the headrest at any other height you need to essentially open / spread the pin and LOCK the headrest into this position. You cannot dynamically move the headrest up/down???
I ended up having the dealer remove all the clips and left the headrests in the lowest position, but I can now remove them simply by pulling them up and out.
Here is the pic of the now removed clips:
You could do this yourself by removing the visible screws on the back of the seat, but you can't completely take off the back seat cover because the lever to release the seats is hard to remove so you sort of have to stick your hand in there with some pliers and bang out the clip.

Hi there I'm Mike from Italy.
Just get my 2011 G55 AMG, and I have the same problem !!!
the rear L & R headrest doesn't go down, the center one goes up and down
I can't remove them too.
If you check at the online manual, it's written that you have to push a sall plastic button tha's on the base of the headrest on the left side.
http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/manual-cars/ba/cars/463/en/manual_base.shtml?id=in-depth/index_a.shtml∂=in-depth
But there is NO button on the seat !
Here where I leave, I've been to 4 MD dealers and nobody knows how to do it !
I've hardly push down the headrests, and they went down, but not down like the center one !
