What justifies an AMG badge...

On "another" forum, there was a pretty popular topic about what justifies someone putting an AMG badge on there car. Well, I decided to start one here.

The only thing that justifies an AMG badge is if you have a REAL AMG. Now, I am not bashing anyone here, but the people who put AMG badges on their non-AMG cars, give the real AMG owners a bad name.

An example of this, is a E320 with an AMG body kit, wheels, and badge pulls up to a light and an M3 driving pulls up next to the E320... however, the M3 driver sees the AMG badge and assumes that the car is an E55 rather than an E320. So the M3 driver guns it and obliterates the E320... and do you know what? The M3 driver just thinks he just took an E55 AMG to school, when in actuality, he did not. So the M3 driver gets home and goes on one of the BMW forums and starts posting away in the kills section... "Hey guys, I smoked an MBNZ E55 AMG today! He was no match for my powerful M3! M Power rules blah blah!". So now all of his other M3 buddies aswell as himself will take that like a shot in the vein with ego juice.

All i'm saying, is if you want an AMG, then buy one. If you cannot afford an AMG, but you can afford the modifications like a body kit and whatnot, buy Lorinser or another aftermarket tuners merchandise in which you can justify your car as being a real Lorinser, because they are known for their body kits, wheels, etc., not for their engine performance modifications.

Same here. I guess people put the AMG badge just so they can feel good about it?? In any case to each his own.

This is a debate for the ages-has and always will be. Where one says you must have the AMG engine, others may say as long as you have the wheels or body kit or both. I personally dont really care unless someone takes off their E430 or CLK430 badge (or whatever engine/chassis badge you have) and replaces that with a 55 badge and then puts the AMG badge on the right. Thats were the fakes come in.

AMG needs to differentiate the performance models with more than a body kit and a badge. BMW has the same problem except current M3. It seems like every E30, E36 318i is actually an M3 in disguise!
Perhaps the answer is an exclusive body kit that cannot be purchased as a "sport" option.

I think BMW 3 series owners out there have serious problems badging their cars correctly.

One day, I was driving down the street. Saw this possibly 2001 3-Series sedan w/ a M3 badge. I was like....geez...an automatic sedan......who is HE trying to fool! The blond girl at the passenger seat?

I used to think an MB must have AMG engine to have the AMG badge on. But after seeing so many "fake" ones, I think I am just used to it. I won't do it myself though.

I saw one a while ago. I got to take a picture because I was under a red light. (BTW, it was in Hong Kong)

Please don't dilute my elitist status by badging your MB with an AMG badge. I don't like your attitude and I never did. I would not do it myself but if anyone wants to I'm going to start the undeground AMG badge manufacturing. This is in no way related to "buelleys pulleys" from laguna.

An AMG, is an AMG. Look at the genuine MB AMGs, at the OFFICIAL MB site.

http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...&modelCode=AMG

There are only a few true AMGs,

but lots of AMG WANNA-BES!

personally, i don't really care if people want to put these badges on their cars - mainly b/c it is harmless. if it makes them feel better, good for them. (i guess you could argue that it makes you angry - so it isn't totally harmless - especially if you pull up and harass them )

anyway, i just saw a green bmw 8series w/ a V12 and an ///AMG tag on the back - i did a double-take. i have to think that that is just pure ignorance. unlike a bmw wanting to have an M tag, to put the wrong tuner is just a mistake. i was so curious that i pulled up next to them to see who was driving, and it was a mom w/ a little kid. go figure.

I saw an MB flat emblem on the hood of a 325i once, it was pathetic!

I think only having an AMG engine justifies putting AMG badge, as simple as that.

That's what matters, that's where the beef is: The Powerplant.

Plus the billsteins and AMG suspension tuning and the AMG exhaust system.

...and of course the V12 transmission and the 4" diameter driveshaft in the CLK55 AMG.

Everything else is cosmetic, show and ...

AMG wasn't made famous for their pretty body kits and badges, they were made famous for their beastly engines, and that's all that matters.

2002 C230 K
Someone on this forum, pretty sure it was Buellwinkle, saw a brand new C230K Coupe with AMG rims that was sporting an AMG badge - put on there by the dealer.

Now that's just wrong.

Cheers, BT

I wonder what the salesmen and other people at the dealership think when someone asks to buy AMG badges like that.
