Cool Amg Challenge

just finished taking my new 500sl to the amg challenge at summit point raceway in w va. i did not take my car on the track but, mercedes offers a chance for the entrants to drive the amg models. all except sl55 was there to drive. sl55 was on display. the cl55 and s 55 were my favorite. they had instructors for each person to ride with you driving as fast and braking as hard a possible thru a nice course. esp turned off for the slide effect. autocross and skid pad also was driven by those involved. david hobbs was present and a great treat. they had two drivers taking hot laps in e55 that would take people on rides full out. that was great, i did it 5-6 times and it was like a thrill ride. you get a lot of respect for these guys and the heat and challenge of driving a race car for long time. the brake pads were smoking and the tires were going fast.

I experienced E55 'AMG hot laps' last year during www.mbpowertrip.com for free. It was a thrill ride and the tires had to be changed very often. Was the $850 entry fee worth it?

Don' forget about www.mbemotion.com at Fedex field this weekend? Aug 23-25.

David Hobbs was there? I would have love to have gone just to meet him!

What did you think about the torque at speed these cars have ? Amazes most people what a 4000 lbs car can do even at speed.

What was the E55s top speed in on the front stretch?

Sounds to me like you got ripped off. The MBCCA has an event at summit point in the spring for a couple hundred bucks and you can drive the circuit all out for many laps. $850 for a ride-along? LOL.

these were not just ride alongs. we got to drive the cl55, s55, e55, slk super all models at top speed and hard braking. one was wrecked into a tree. we were not driving our cars but mb cars. it was a great experience to learn to let it loose and just enjoy.

I was on one of those MB powertrip events, driven in an E55. There was smoke coming out of the footwells inside the car.

I think Safet meant fender well smoke when driven on hot laps by the professionals. Quite an entertaining ride!

The crashed E55 happened during follow the leader laps. The driver continued the event but the car was towed away undriveable. No one was pointing fiingers when it was briefly mentioned during the close ceromony.

There has been a couple of incidents during the Challenge tour no one injured.

No, I was sitting in the passenger seat of an E55 being driven by one of the professional track drivers and there was smoke by my feet. Maybe coming in from the vents? (i.e. he was braking hard before the turns)

There is a good possibility that it was coming from the brakes into the ventilation system. They ran the two E55s continuously for the afternoon.

It was neat to see two black E55s run together around the track with their lights on. Sort like they were running in formation or escorting an official.

I was thinking the stream could be coming from the events could have been condensation from the AC. Thinking about this brought back memories following a friend in his Camaro as he left a big plump of smoke in front of me at a stop light. Needless to say that I forgot to turn off the HVAC and had a car full! :P
