Whoa, GM buys Chrysler!?

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/14/r...hrysler-group/

"Take this for what it is, a rumor about which General Motors and DaimlerChrysler have refused to comment. According to a report today in German magazine Manager Magazin, DaimlerChrysler is in talks to sell its Chrysler Group division to GM. The magazine cites sources within DaimlerChrysler as saying that talks are in full swing but at an early stage. Dieter Zietsche, CEO of DaimlerChrysler, refused to comment on the report when asked at this morning's press conference where the company's Recovery and Transformation plan, a.k.a. Project X, was announced.

So neither side is talking about whether such talks exist, which leads one to speculate that there's some truth to these rumors. GM, however, would not seem to be in a position to purchase a rival domestic automaker with numerous competing products considering that it's just beginning to emerge from its own turnaround and restructuring plan. What's more, we can't imagine the complexities GM would encounter trying to absorb Chrysler's union workforce.

We bet DaimlerChrysler and GM are talking about something, but wouldn't put money on the subject being the wholesale purchase of the Chrysler Group.

Thanks to all who tipped on this!"

WHOA, WHEN DOES GM HAVE MONEY TO BUY CHRYSLER!?

I always thought it weird, Benz and Chrysler. I thought that one day it would be a divorse made in heaven. Then Chrysler started making money with the 300C, Charger and Magnum. I wouldn't dump them now.

I don't know what GM wants with Chrysler, but this has been a persistant rumor lately. Apparently, there are some Chinese and Japanese auto companies intested in them too, but I haven't heard of any discussions supposedly taking place there.

Just a wild guess: apparently, at some point Daimler bought into Mitsubishi and we all know about the Chrysler-Mitsubishi "arrangement" going back to the 1990s. The only problem with this possible scenario is that Mitsu is allegedly broke.

I agree. I think there is money to be made from Chrysler by eliminating the superflous models. The Dodge Sprinter seems to be ubiquitous here (in Canada) and the Jeep Commander looks an awful lot like a "G-wagen". I think any problems are management incompetance.
Btw as a newbie, hi everybody.

Does anybody think that if MB finally dumps Chrysler, that they will offer more model variation in the US since they wouldn't be "competing" for market share in the same market? Or is MBUSA determined to only be a upper-crust company. I would personally love to buy an E-class with a small diesel and cloth interior, ha, looks like I should move.
