If you had a chance to drive any Benz thats made for 1 week, as many miles as you want. What would it be, and why.

I'll take a SL55, Magma red. Cause its the one of the rarest cars MB makes and chances are no one in the little town will ever see another one.

Ok, thats what but I can't see the why....

I would pretty much choose the same - but a brilliant silver one. Why - well because it's helluva car - beautiful and fast!

The '54 300SL. The gullwing. It's the definition of sportscar. Not a sedan or coupe trying to pose, it's a genuine, right from the track race car, made just civilized enough for polite society.

McLaren-Mercedes MP4-13. Does that count as an MB car, now that MB has an ownership interest in McLaren?

Why the MP4-13, just because it won the championship? I would pick the MP4-17, it's a better car, they get better and faster every year.

You're right; I'd pick the MP4-13 because it is the car that won the first McLaren-Mercedes championship (at least the first one for the partnership; we all know McLaren won many championships prior to that!)

The MP4-17, I dunno, it's just been disappointing me way too much as a McLaren fan. I started watching in late '97, so it's kinda heartbreaking, after years of watching McLaren duke it out for #1 to not even have a shot, settle for THIRD. But to each their own. The MP4-13, still, would be the car I would want for a week.

I'd pick the 1955 gullwing once owned by my grandmother, if it's still around somewhere.

I think the argument b/w the MP4-13 and 17 is pretty moot, as eithe rwould scare the living crap out of you

Sorry, but the MP4-1x is not a choice because the constructor is McLaren, not Mercedes-Benz, and you people call yourself McLaren fans! Sheesh!

I would have to choose the CLK-GTR, CLK-DTM, or the Gullwing. Not sure which one .

Which is why I'd prefer the one that won the championship.

Which is why I qualified my post with, "Does that count as an MB car, now that MB has an ownership interest in McLaren?"

In the same vein, you could also make a colorable claim that the CLK-GTR is an AMG (or is it HWA now? I can't keep up with Mr. Aufrecht's business dealings anymore), not an MB.

LOL My grandmother had a W126 '83 300SD (I think that's the designation, my memory is a bit hazy). I just remember it was a solid car, though as a 9-10 year old kid I didn't really know all that much.

Mercedes bought 40% of McLaren in late 1999. So I guess that the 1998 MP4-13 is still technically more McLaren than Mercedes (at this time Mercedes only owned 25% of Ilmor, the company that built the motor). This year Mercedes purchased an additional 30% of Ilmor so the company now holds 55 percent majority holding (effective 31 October 2002) and will now operate under the name Mercedes-Ilmor. Mercedes will acquire the remaining shares of Ilmor by 2005 via a step-by-step take-over.

The CLK-GTR and CLK-LM were built by AMG and the CLR was built by HWA (which came into existence in January of 1999 after Mercedes bought AMG). So none of these cars were made when Mercedes had actual ownership. Technically, you could consider AMG/HWA as the manufacturer and Mercedes as the customer who purchased them.

Cheers, BT

PS: I'd like to have a 1937 W125 for a week - 650 HP on skinny tires! Best of all - 100% Mercedes!
