anyone know how to covert diesel fuel cost to SuperUnleaded in terms of prices/mpg

if a gL450 gets 16mpg on $3.19/gallon super unleaded

and GL320 CDI drivers are getting 24mpgs on $3.49/gallon diesel

how much more expensive can diesel fuel get, compared to super unleaded, to continue to have an advantage using the CDI vs. GL

and why is diesel sooo much more expensive than super during the WINTER months?? during the summer, diesel here was about 20cents LESS than super unleaded, now its 30cents MORE!!!

It's known as supply and demand...in the winter there is a great demand for heating oil in addition to the diesel for the highway.

2008 GL450
GL450 = $3.19/16mpg = $0.199 per mile

GL320 = $3.49/24mpg = $0.145 per mile

Assuming the price of premium unleaded does not rise while diesel goes up, diesel would need to be selling higher than $4.78 per gallon in order for GL320 to cost more in fuel than GL450.

NJ is right, the primary reason for increase in winter is fuel oil for houses. They also use "winterized" diesel in colder climates to prevent gelling. I've never been able to figure out how much that contributes to the winter increase.

Check, exactly right. And by the time we hit international rates for premium unleaded, diesel will really look like a bargain. If I could only get my wife into a diesel M5....

oh, and almost EVERYTHING you eat, drink, watch, wear, sit on, and look at is delivered by Diesel fuel in some form (boat, truck, train). Demand is up. But do the math, it would have to be almost $5/gal to be effective (not to mention you would never recoup the original cost to covert, if possible). and gas would be in the $4.60/gal range when diesel hits $5...

at that point, it may be time for a Hybrid Toyota for me. I do about 10,000 miles every 3 months.

** I have a mileage calculator I built on an Excel spreadsheet where you can input your miles, cost of fuel, cost of oil changes, cost of tires (and at what mileage to replace) your residual costs (if you were getting reimbursed for work), and what you have left over. I designed it for employees who I pay mileage. They are always concerned about fuel costs and what they actually spend on wear/tear. If anyone wants a copy of it, pm me an email address. I'll email it out to ya..

And when it does show up, it'll likely be a diesel hybrid, which will blow the doors off of the gas hybrids in mileage.
