Thumbs up GL CDI - More noisy than ML, E?

Don't get it.

I walk to work, so I get to see and hear a lot of cars from the outside. I can never tell if an ML or E Klasse is gonna be a CDI by sound, GL? Every time.

If you have never heard your truck from the outside, you should. It sounds like an angry milk truck, with a whispering, big-rig turbo whine, that is quite impressive.

ML, E, even though the engine is the same, never hear that. There is something in the induction, exhaust and packaging that creates this unique sound, but you can never hear it from inside. All we get is the exhaust rumble (oddly absent from outside)

Or maybe it's all just so much cacaphony from the extra load and weight?

Who knows? Just an observation...

Only immediate thing that I can think of is that the intercooler hose recall only applied to GLs.

The E's of course are significantly lower to the ground, which will obviously absorb some of the sound.

I agree, I love the sound of my GL diesel.

I've had some weird sounds from the front of my GL on occassion. Before I had the compressor replaced, every once in a while it would "purr" at me twice a second. I get a "tick" sometimes as well. There's a hell of a lot of stuff whipping around at various RPMs in there and lots of opportunities for noise. But I think the greatest part of that is it's really not evident from the inside at all.

The GL CDI sounds like a Fed-ex/Dodge Sprinter delivery truck to me. I guess that's because they both use the same engine.

Not really. The first gen. sprinters have a 5 cyl. The new ones, yeah, but I have only seen a couple...

the gl being bigger, the engine compartment is fairly empty. as such the components around the engine are further apart which does not help in noise attenuation.

thats my theory.

Lots of the new Sprinters down here. I do like the turbo whistle on the GL320's but I really liked it on my old Renntech CL600.
