Unhappy HOW MUCH FOR A BRAKE JOB ON A GL?

My wife just brought back our 07 GL from dealer after service B as well as a brake job and I almost fell out of my chair when I learned that they charged us over $1500 for a brake job. $1000 in parts and the balance in labour(4.2 hrs). Is this excessive or typical Mercedes shop pricing?

I had my rear brakes (only) changed about 6 months ago. It was around $300 ($150 for the pads and $150 for labor). For $1,500 I assume you must have gotten all four wheels done plus something else (i.e. did they have to replace a rotor(s))............

Sounds like you had all 4 rotors replaced. I am not sure why it took 4 hours though.

OK, it makes sense now, pads were $187 Cdn for front or back

I guess the 4 disks stated on the invoice are actually rotors. Is it odd that the rotors needed to be replaced with only 55K mi on the vehicle. Do they still turn rotors when they do brake jobs these days?

No, dealers never turn rotors. Most places do not, they just replace them. Disk and rotor are the same thing.

If you got 55k on rotors you're fortunate.

Any reason why you took your MB to the dealer for a simple brake job? The service rates and OEM parts are ridiculously expensive. I own a GL450...and everytime I take it to get the fluids changed, I always have the service techs (not MB but a trusted shop I use), tell me how the thickness of the rotors for future reference and ask them direct questions about how long they will last based on the current wear.

My mechanic has talked himself out of many-a-brake job with me as he is an honest guy at an honest shop. For example, I took my car (a lexus GS430) to get a brake job...he told me I could get at least another 3-5k out of the pads and that rotors were in great shape so no need to replace them. I asked him whether I should get the brake job anyway and he said...and I quote "it is not like you are putting fuel in your car that you will use later - as in topping off when you are near full - we take those pads off now and your just wasting $. Bring it back in at the next oil change - we can do it then."

He basically has a customer for life now. But these guys/shops are hard to come by....Good luck.

I just replaced brakes on our 2007 GL450 myself. labor is $0. parts were pagid/PBR pads/sensors $217 (ordered online), MB brake fuild (2qts) and brake pad paste $38 (@ dealer), brake cleaner $8 (Kragen). Replacing brake fluid is service 4. tools need were jack to lift suv. 9mm allen for front brakes, 7mm allen for rear brakes and a long flat screw driver. retorqued lug nuts to 150Nm. mileage on vehicle is about 35000 and it still had a pad thickness. I just changed it so it does not starts to grind on rotors. logged service 4 in the vehicle service log. Total cost was $263.

Could you please share how you lifted the truck? Did you to one corner at a time? I am trying to figure out proper hydrolic jack locations. It would be great if I could lift both front or rear wheels at once. Where did you place jack stands?

Thanks

I did one wheel at time. I used a jack on sides next to wheel where the owner manual recommends. Jack needs to have a bigger diameter where it contacts vehicle mounting location. I can take some pictures when I get a chance. For bleeding brakes, I had my wheels already installed and just pressed the raise button near the center console. This provide enough clearance to crawl under and unscrew the bleeding nut. For front wheel turn the wheels to one side and do it that way.

If you placed the jack under the mounting location, where did you put the jack stand? Or, you did not use the stand?

Thanks for the link. It's interesting. I would think that a small 2x4 piece would serve the same purpose for much less money

I still wonder though where one would place jack stands. You can't use the stock location since jack will be there to lift the truck. I never get under a car to do any suspension/brake work if it's supported by a jack only. Does MB repair manual list any additional support points?

Thanks

Lesson learned, and thanks for the advice. I will try and find a good repair shop

Some of these post have good points and bad ones. First i think its a very good idea to start a good relation with your dealer and if they are honest they will tell you how many miles you have left on the brakes, but also remember that you do have wear sensors that will come on at around 1k before you are metal on metal so if they suggest pads or rotors them you will wait till the pad indicator light comes on. And grouping every dealer in the pool of theifs is wrong on many levels. I try my very hardest to save all the customers money but also its any good techs job to let people know what maint. items a car needs and if things are are wrong ( leaks, wear items )

And last thing compare apples to apples. If someone works on their own car the labor isnt FREE its your time. If i go to BJs and buy food there and make sandwiches it will be cheaper then going to a deli.. So is it worng for a dealer to charge labor in reason ????
