I couldn't stop from laughing thinking to myself, I wonder how many engine lights were blinking the next day!

That's a bit extreme BUT it is amazing what the off road package will allow the vehicle to do! I've dealt with deep snow and snow/mud one lane roads in Vermont and the ability to raise it up to 14in of ground clearance and lock the differentials has helped on more than one occasion!

Nice how they lure you in. I watched the first 30 seconds and was thinking to myself that my driveway has been worse than that, but then it got a little extreme.

OK, so now I have a funny(?) story. About year ago I was looking to buy some hunting property in hilly southeast Minnesota. We went down and drove up a 'field road' into a high pasture. Well we got up there and it started raining in buckets. As I tried to come back from the field and down the field road the GL slid off the muddy, steep, side angled trail. It stopped barely before dropping off a 25 foot edge. We towed it out the next day, but it was dangerously close.

I can tell you my tires are not meant to handle off road muddy, slippery situations. I also must admit that while I did have it in 4 low, I didn't think to utilize DSR, but we were crawling very slowly.

I think all of that terrain was fine until the final mud pit - the intakes on our vehicles are NOT high enough to do that!

Actually..... the vehicle in the video MUST have had the ORP.....with that you can raise it to the highest level which gives you 14in of ground clearance and 23in of "water fording" depth ( or so the book says!)

About 12 years ago I had a Jeep Cherokee that I used as a hunting vehicle back in Florida. The terrain was just like that, and I had a blast driving through "puddles" where you could not see the hood.

I am sure these SUV GL's and ML's could handle this stuff no problem, just like my old Jeep, the difference is I paid $2000 cash for the beater Jeep, and $2000 will not replace anything on my ML.

I doubt many M-B owners would subject their vehicles to this kind of torture, but it's nice to know how capable they are should the apocalypse hit tomorrow.

Hello All,
Thought I’d try taking the GL off-road today (don’t have off-road package) to test its standard capabilities. With the raised height and off-road mode enabled, it’s not bad. However, I did not traverse through the deep mud pits in fear of getting stuck.

looks like fun
Don't forget to air down, and get yourself a rescue strap for those mud pits
I did an offroad clinic in Anza Borrego and it was great. Highly recommended.
Here I am about to back out of some rocks I reckon I won't make it across:

This was easy stuff, just a lil bounce around on the rocks:

Eric, how's your alignment after a day of off roading? Does she drive like all 4 wheels are pointed in different directions or is it okay? I feel like my wheels can get out of balance and or alignment after daily driving and a few potholes.

I've never found nor felt any issues. Even had the alignment rechecked after.

One note: I've got the 60-series tires, so that helps somewhat. Also, drop the tire pressures down to 20 psi and a lot of the stresses get moderated, whether you're talking higher speeds along washboard roads or bouncing around on rocks.

Actually the GL is a great off-road vehicle. I take mine off-road on a regular basis, and sometimes way off the beaten path. I've had guys in Jeeps jaw drop when they see where I can go. These pics are pretty tame...

Thanks guys, I love seeing what the GL can do off-road. If you have any video, I'd love to see it. There's not much on YouTube except for the handful of Russian videos and a few snow videos...

When I did the Anza Borrego off-road clinic, the guys were pretty impressed by what I was able to get through. And I had terrible off-road tires then.

That's a great brush bar. I was trying to come up with a rescue point attachment; wondering if you figured out anything for that besides the front tiedown loop.

Check out my thread on the Mother Of All Basket Racks if you're wondering how much you can fit on top of that thing.
