GL550 window vandalized - replacement options
So someone apparently thought it was a good idea to carve a star or david into my GL550 driver's side window earlier this week when my vehicle was parked downtown on the street.
Taken it to a glass shop and it's too deep for any kind of buffing/epoxy treatment (catches on a fingernail).
So replacement cost is looking right at around $680. Insurance deductible is $500 which almost doesnt make filing a claim worth it (rate increase).
Safelite gave me a quote of $325 but it's for a non-laminated glass - I'm 99% sure the GL has laminated glass windows out of the factory so is there any harm in me going with the cheaper glass other than it might shatter more if I get in an accident? $700 is a steep price for a dang piece of glass.
Any other ideas?

for sure. Pisses me off that I've gone through painstaking efforts to avoid door dings by parking far away, put in measure like drawer liners under my car seats to avoid creasing the leather, etc only to have some J/A come along and vandalize my vehicle. Welcome to Little Rock :/

Um, because if he is then it is someone that knows him. That would make this a non random act and he is clearly being targeted. I would be worried if that was the case.
Does it relate to his question, No. But I think it's a valid question. Just my 2c.

My thoughts precisely. Random act of *******ness- just a fact of life. Targeted religion- based vandalism - a whooooole different ball of wax.

The special coating on the glass is important to reduce heat from the sun in the cabin. I would get the OEM and file a claim with my insurance and pay the $500 deductible. According to my agent vandalism claims do not increase the insurance rates but check with your agent first.

I know state farm does not increase premiums for vandalism and if you know some info about the vandal they might get the deductible from him. I had my E amd ML vandalized but police caught the vandals so maybe that made a difference of them covering the deductible.
If he is Jewish that also might be considered as a hate crime!!!

when my car was hit by a giant piece of metal on the freeway, destroying my windshield I was able to file through comprehensive claims and get my windshield replaced without having an increased rate. If another vehicle was involved, then yes rates would probably go up...

Cool thanks all. It was definitely random, I was downtown and the car was parked on the side of the street at night. Someone with me that left earlier and parked closeby said he noticed a bum "hiding in the shadows" ... and no, I'm not jewish, lol.
Went ahead and filed a claim to get the OEM glass. 80% of the cost was through the deductible but I guess saving 20% is saving 20% right?
