Smile Creaking noise from wheel during high acceleration, CV joint or something else?

HI All

I am having a loud slipping noise on my 2008 GL320 CDI with 146,000 miles.
The issue:
While under medium to high acceleration at around 2,000 RPM and usually when coming from a stop or low speeds of about 15mph there is a loud slipping noise coming from the driver side wheel underneath the car. It will creak 2 or 3 times pretty loudly *clack clack clack* just like that. Then the noise will disappear and never be heard again at high speeds.
This noise began seemingly after I replaced the front air bags. So, I went back in there today and made sure the CV joint is pressed into the transmission and a clicking nose was heard when it was pressed all the way in. I suspected this might be the culprit because the car now pulls to the left very very slightly. Made sure all nuts are super tight and that there is no lateral movement of the air bag strut.

Suspecting the CV joint might be bad I rant the following tests:

Hit the cv joint both around the inner joint and outer joint with a rubber mullet. Both seem tight.
Drove the car in circles from a stand still with steering wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right. No noise can be heard.
Took the car to a local mechanic who has limited experience working with Mercedes cars, he suggested the issue might be the CV joint. But he is not sure. Quoted 850 to replace.
The CV joint is only about 150 bucks. So I could replace that just to throw parts at it but it very strange that my tests did not duplicate the same noise.

So I am hoping someone can give me some pointers on how I can trouble shoot this myself.
Thanks!

How did you secure the truck when replacing the bags? Did you put jack stands on the black metal brackets with oval shape (one on each side) that are right behind the wheels (at 3 o’clock if you are looking at the wheel from th side?) if you did- you bent them and they are touching the frame making this exact sound. If those brackets are nice and straight it is your cv joint. At 140k it is right about time for the driver side (longer cv joint prone to failure )

Thanks for the response I guess the cv joint being bad is very plausible then.

I put jack stands on the plastic jack points under the side view mirrors.

they seem fine?

Replaced the drivers CV joint today. Noise still persists.

what would be the next logical part to look at?

Im gonna answer my own question

the video below shows another case of exactly the same issue

the issue ended up being the chain guide in the transfer case. requiring a new front differential.

here is a thread that was made about it explaining the situation

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/x164...e-my-axle.html

new differential is about 600 used on ebay.

As Opie said they solved it, but I read that and I heard slipping transfer case chain as well.
