Should I powder coat my rims?
Hi 2011 GL550 with the factory 21" AMG wheels. There isn't much clear coat left on the wheels since the brake dust is very hard to wash off during each carwash and lots of times I need to use wheel polish to get the brake dust off. I was wondering if you guys have other wheel setups (aftermarket) or refinished your (factory) wheels with powder coatings, etc? Feel free to share any pictures.

The only thing I have ever had done to wheels is to have them re-clearcoated. You're in a big enough town that there should be some wheel repair shops near you. Just start asking around and you'll find some. It was a while ago that I had this done, but I remember thinking that it was a very reasonable price, too.
In the future... (1) clean the wheels more often so the brake dust doesn't get caked on there so hard and (2) get some good brake dust cleaner. Check places like Chemical Guys, online, so you get the "good stuff".

In a nutshell, look for ceramic brake pads of your favorite brand.

Akebono is as close to dust free as any pad I've used. They require a little more pedal pressure and don't have as good initial bite as the OEM pads, but well worth the reduction in dust and they seem to be lasting a LONG time.

Thanks for all the tips. Will definitely consider the re-clearcoating the rims. Has anyone here had their rims colored black? (powder coated or painted). If you do, would you mind sharing some pictures? I just want to know what the black wheels would look like on a black GL550 2011.
