The best way to mod GL550 exhaust?

Hello everyone. I own a GL 550 x166 and the sound of my vehicle was too bad for a V8 and i decided to replace the resonators and the main muffler with original 63 exhaust. The sound was ok but I thought that maybe if i delete my resonators it would become much better. After i replaced my 63 resonators the sound was very loud and good but was not close to 63. But after 2 months I decide to do something else because it just vibrates all the car and sometimes i even have headache because of it. So would you advice to just bring back the resonators and go on with a kind of 63 amg sound or are there any other things that i may try?(without buying any other details because i have already spent much money on GL 63 exhaust). Thank you

Options then would be catless downpipes or electric exhaust cutouts. I have catless downpipes, removed resonator and just added exhaust cutouts. I added a thread last week with a vid or 2 in a thread for exhaust cutouts.

https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...t-cutouts.html

Car will be back finally tomorrow after 6mths in shop and will get move vids and pics done ASAP and added to my build thread.

Thank you for your reply but I heard that deleting cats is bad for car and still it will be just very loud non amg sound. I want it to be clear and not too loud.

Am i understanding you correctly?
You replaced the GL550 exhaust with a OEM GL63 exhaust, assuming from the down-pipes back, since it appears to be a single piece (like this) and it does not sound like a GL63?
I am asking since i too am interested in increasing the depth of my GL550 exhaust note and would rather not chop up the OEM parts if possible.

The exhaust manifold and downpipes on both GL63 and GL550 are the same part numbers, not sure what else would contribute to the sound....unless of course the obvious 'its the engine'...which would almost remove all possibility of our GL550's inheriting the GL63 sound.

4.6 vs 5.5 will sound diff as the 5.5 will sound deeper and louder if all setup the exact same. 550 vs 63 the mufflers are diff with less baffle. But even adding catless downpipes and taking out the oem resonator on our 550 which would be “close” to the overall flow of air the 63 but still clearly more muffled it was similar in sound but not the same park still. So as stated added cutouts which really wake it up but fully opened it’s not so pleasing so keep it partly opened. Will add back in the oem resonator to see how that works when fully opened.

63 sound needs a 63 sized engine if you don’t want to “hack” the oem pipes out to get some improved sound.

63 engine here. Yes, it sounds amazing when you put in sport mode. Really opens up the exhaust and you get that nice deep burble.

Too many german broads
Bumping this. I just had the resonator removed from my 166 with the m278 motor. 2 straight pipes. Sound is great, little improved and nothing crazy. No errors, no drone. Well worth it. Had it completed at Midas but the work was done professionally.

I went ahead and did this too….you’re right, it’s just right. Not obnoxious at all and I don’t think my wife even noticed it. Sounds much more appropriate to me. $120 at my local exhaust guy…

You said you added to straight pipes? Why didn't you add an X Pipe, isn't that what the resonator does essentially? I mean doesn't the resonator "MIX" the exhaust inside that giant box and then spit it out in dual pipes? Looks like adding an X pipe would have been a better solution than just straight pipes.

Adding an X pipe to a turbocharged car is not a better solution. MB uses H pipes or something similar to the resonator shown above because it keeps the exhaust velocity higher and makes more power than what you would get with an X pipe.

Oh yeah? H Pipe is what the resonator is? Ok, guess I will look for an H pipe to go in that place instead.
Thanks for the input!
