Oil consumption / Grade use
Per usuer manual:
"Depending on your driving style, the vehicle
consumes up to 0.9 US qt (0.8 liters) of oil per
600 miles (1,000 km). The oil consumption
may be higher than this when the vehicle is
new or if you frequently drive at high engine
speeds."
What is your real world consumption with the M274 engine on board the GLC300 4Matic ?
Here in Canada MB suggest their own brand of 229.5 5W40 synthetic at ~$11/li ( $14 US these days ). Used to be able to get similar specs Mobil 1, but no longer ... 229.5 5W40 is close to impossible to get in my neck of the woods except at MB dealers.
What kind/grade do you use ... are you stucked with dealer purchase ?

A qt every 600 miles? That's bordering on absurd. The worst oil burning car I ever owned was an Audi Q7 and that was about 1/2 qt every 4-5000 miles. Can a current MB owner comment on this?

Conceivably, one would be adding oil every other stop for fuel. Absolutely inconceivable for a new Mercedes-Benz automobile.

I read that also, and would be a pain to refill oil that frequently!
Or are they assuming that's what will happen with people who are always "racing" their car around everywhere?

There are several companies that market motor oil that comply with the MB 229.5 spec. At my first oil change my intention us to use Red Line which is compliant.
Don't know in what part of Canada you live so don't what gas/oil companies you have available. An internet search should enlighten you as to which companies sell compliant oil.
For what it's worth I buy my oil at a local hot rod shop.
It's important to use compliant oil so as to avoid warranty issues with the dealer in the event there is an oil related failure. My observation is that certain dealers do everything in their power to thwart warranty claims.

I live in eastern Canada, and most oil Co list 229.5 compliant oil in their catalogue but none are available ( ex: "out of stock" )... 229.5/5W-40 is hard to get by and on the internet the price for a quart at an average of $14CDN is more expensive than MB brand at the dealer ( $11CDN ) ...

2016 GLC 4Matic
I think that statement in the Owners Manual is simply legalese to protect Mercedes Benz. If I recall correctly, that very same verbage has been used in the owner's manuals of every MB that I have owned and that covers a few decades. I currently have a 2012 ML BlueTec and it says the same thing in the owners manual. I wouldn't worry about it.

You should be able to get mobile 1 for $5-6/qt in the 5 qt i the U.S.. Not that many MB owners are changing their own oil. But it does show the relatively large markup dealers take when using this product.

Guess I'm the exception to the rule. I do my own servicing on my vehicles to include the now gone 2015 C300, the now 2016 GLC and our 2015 F-350 diesel. You do need to keep records and receipts for warranty purposes but I like the hands on approach. Found problems on our past Lexus that their techs totally missed till I pointed them out. Guess I'm old school and don't mind getting dirty.

Then at an in opportune time I was leaving on a lengthy trip with my car due service including oil change. No time to do it myself. So, with oil and filter in hand I went to the dealer. After getting a bill for slightly more than $10.00 I decided my time crawling under my vehicles had come to an end.
Both techs. that maintain my cars and I have an understanding. Fill the filter with oil before installation....don't torque the filter and crankcase plug to 200 lb ft.

From the time I acquired my first car, a 41 Chrysler, until about five years ago I was like mikbar 2. No one but me touched my cars crankcase drain plug.

The warning light you talk about is exactly the reason you fill the filter.

Oh but I do. They check everything you discussed above and more, like rotate the tires, fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir. set tire pressure and check coolant level. They don't lub hinges but I don't complain. The deal is too good. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I saw an engine compartment sticker recommending Mobil1 brand.
I live in NJ and travel up to Canada in the winter and was guessing 5W30.
Thank you!

1/2 liter of OEM 5W40 per 5000 miles. Car has 38491 miles on it as at August 8, 2021. Yes - metric oil volume and imperial distance.

Or, Motomaster oeplus 0w40 5L for c$27 on sale, if you want 0w oil grade.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-oeplus-european-0w40-premium-synthetic-engine-oil-5-l-0287963p.html
I buy many of them on sale, then change oil every 5,000km.

A couple years ago when I had my GL, found that Mercedes Benz Engine Oil comes from FUCH, in Australia anyway.

Hi All,
I have a GLC250d MY18 that is out of warranty, and schedule for service ( change oil) in a months time. I have a Nulon 5-30 DIESEL synthetic that I use in other car(Prado 150), I look at the spec and it says Merc approved 229.51 spec oil. Is this alright to use for GLC for Australian climate?Just confuse about the 229.52 oil. Cheers
Thanks
