Hands-Free Tailgate Opening
Hi All - I have Pkg.2 on my GLC300 that includes Keyless-Go. Car delivered with tow hitch (which I did not want). I cannot open the tailgate with the hands-free option (p.87 of Operator's Manual). Any thoughts?

Please note the Owner's manual covers ALL the available options for the GLC.
The parts of the manual that apply to your GLC are based on the options your GLC has.
To have Hands-Free Access you need to have that factory option.
The prior post is correct - if you have/order trailer hitch - you can't order Hands Free Access at the same time - they are mutually exclusive options - you can have one - but not the other.
Let's not confuse that with the fact your GLC does not have Hands Free Access option.
If you have the factory tow hitch - correct you can't

Hi,
I had a tow hitch supplied and fitted by our dealer prior to delivery.
We too thought the wave of the foot to open the tailgate was disabled.
However we can still access it from time to time, about 70% accurate for opening and closing. No idea why. We do look funny doing a leg shake to try and open it on the remaining 30%

Yes - if you have factory installed Hands-Free Access - and have a aftermarket hitch installed - "often" hands free will still work.
However, if you don't have factory installed Hands-Free Access there is nothing you can do to add it.
I think the OP read the manual - saw Hands Free Access - but either way he does not have that factory installed feature

Dealer can order/install OEM hitch - which is small receiver - aftermarket hitch is cheaper but large/normal receiver - different strokes for different folks

Fabbrisd1,
Can you please explain your post? My understanding is that the factory hitch and hands-free hatch opener are mutually exclusive. You can have one or the other but not both. What is this dealer installed OEM hitch that works with the hands-free opener?

These two options are NOT mutually exclusive. I ordered my glc with both, and both work very well.

Has anyone worked out how to re-instate the hands free tailgate opening after the towbar has been fitted? I had a towbar fitted at the dealer, and they did warn me that the hands free would be disabled. Im not sure if this was done in software, or if it is a physical disconnection of the sensor behind the rear bumper..

I ordered my car in may this year and arrived early november. the dealer was nervous because didn't know if this will work. but it turned out it did. it seems they used another type of hitch in previous models but now they changed it and it's ok. i live in europe.

After reading this thread and the can/can't posts and looking at tgcbr's video above, I think I've figured it out.
The hitch on the vehicles sold in the EU are very different than the hitch on vehicles destined for North America. Evidently the European spec. hitch is compatible while on the other hand the NA hitch is not.

Has anyone got a photo of the sensor behind the bumper that is responsible for the handsfree opening of the tail gate? Ive had a look behind the bumper, but with the towbar now installed its difficult to see much back there..
Cheers!

I am in the process of ordering a 2019 GLC 43 but the hands free access and trailer still not compatible (i honestly thought they were going to fix that inconvenience) .
I am probably going to order the hands free package and figure out the trailer hitch after .
It will be interesting to see where the sensor in located and if it's possible to move it on the side . On the Volvo XC 60 , when you order the trailer hitch ,they relocate the sensor to the rear left side .
Does anyone have picture of the rear bumper removed with the sensor exposed ?

That's what im after too, Ianoipat! I had another look behind the bumper yesterday, but its too difficult to see anything whilst the bumper is on the car.. I found a plug disconnected, but because of the limited space back there, i couldnt see where to plug it back into.
This youtube shows the retrofit of the sensor for the C class, but I dont know if the set up is exactly the same for the GLC. I couldnt see anything behind the bumper that resembled the sensor in the youtube clip.
