HUD (head up display) on GLC
Hi,
- Do you have it?
- Do you like it / your experience with it?
- Is it worth waiting (3-4 months!) for a custom order to get it?
Thanks!

Due to a friends's recommendation, I got HUD (on a July, '16, custom order, when it was hard to get for a time) and am pleased with my decision. I wasn't delayed in delivery as I had allowed a long lead time. I think it is worth a wait, if you can, because I find it reduces the stress of driving on the interstates, i.e., information you need is "right in front of you." Enjoy your new Benz.

I have ordered the HUD. I test drove a BMW X5 and it was fanstastic. It became one of the must have features on any new vehicle.
Does anyone know if it displays media, radio like the BMW one?

I was interested in it, but you can not actually see the HUD if you have polarized sunglasses on. This was a deal breaker for me as I almost always have sunglasses on when I'm driving the car (except at night of course).
Also you cannot get HUD with Driving Assist, which is another reason I passed on it.

senatov,
I can see the display faintly ('15 BMW X3) with polarized sunglasses if I "adjust my head/viewing angle" slightly for a quick glance.
However, if it's an occasion when you really need the info, like the NAV display directions, what I usually do is slide my sunglasses up outside of my line of sight.
It is a drag, but the only other solution is to get non-polarized sunglasses.
BTW, HUD is such an important feature for me that I have excluded the GLE from the list of potential vehicles to replace my '15 X3. The GLE series is apparently not getting HUD until the re-design in '19 or '20.

Re polarized glasses: I too find that they considerably dim the HUD but in most conditions I can still make out the projected info. (For navigation I usually rely on the Command screen.) I have the option of non-polarized sunglasses which I can put to use if removing the fit-overs becomes a nuisance. I'd still opt for the HUD.

In Australia the HUD and the panoramic sunroof come in the 'Vision' package, so you can't have one without the other. An odd combination, but there you have it. As wmc021 observed, here it seems to be independent of the assistance options, and so I'd be surprised if it wasn't in North America.
Some people rave about it. I wouldn't go that far, but it is useful. You have to train yourself to rely on it but when you do, it means that you always have view of your speed no matter what is displayed in the dash digital display. For that reason alone it I wish we had it on our B200. The B200 also has a small digital speedo which can be hard to read at times and a HUD would be easier. The GLC has a larger digital speedo, and the HUD is less critical - you can quickly glance down much more easily. I don't feel that I need it, but it's nice to have. I too ordered non-polarising sunglasses. If you have polarisers, you can be lucky if the polarising angle of the glasses is not exact match for the angle of the HUD projection.
Not sure if I'd do a custom order if HUD was the only reason. Might depend on the wait. Last I checked, order times were close to six months, i.e. a lot longer than in North America, so you have to be prepared to wait for a custom order. I never have.

I've gotten so used to relying on the HUD I never turn it off, only glancing at the instruments every now and then to check fuel level, engine temp, etc.
Since I don't have the speed limit sign option, my HUD just displays navigation instructions, speed and and cruised control info. If I am not using nav the HUD displays direction of travel (N,S,E,W, etc.)

I have it on my GLC 43 and its "cute" but not that much better than the regular display. Also takes sometime to get used to. When someone else drives it they find it annoying, although I tell them they can easily turn it off.

I ORDERED it on my 2018 GLC as I have it on my 2015 Genesis and love it, shows speed limit sign, current speed, set speed, lane keep assist, and navigations' next action.

I have HUD in 2017 4Matic, and love it, and have about every "assist" package available in 2017. Distronic Plus (steering assist), Pre-safe brake with Pedestrian Recognition, blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, Pre-Safe Plus (rear end protection), Cross traffic assist. All the assist packages were part of Premium Package (P03) in 2017, HUD was separate add. Are there other assist packages available in 18?
I ordered the HUD because I've used them since 2010 and find that important driver information is available to me without having to take my eyes off the road, meaning a quicker cross check.

A couple of people have said the HUD isn't available with Driver Assist. My 18' glc-coupe has both options. Love the HUD, just picked up my car 2 days ago. The MB guy who took me through the car features at delivery, brought up the polarized issue and said that the car can detect when there is an inpairment to your sight (ie sunglasses), and automatically adjusts the brightness of the HUD which makes the HUD visible even with polarized glasses. I haven't tried 5he HUD while wearing sunglasses yet

Definitely was not able to order HUD in US MY 18 GLC SUV with Premium Driver Assistance pkg. On-line configurator wouldn't accept and my salesman tried entering into Netstar and rejected it also. Very disappointed but not disappointed enough to buy Q5 or X3.

The cluster in my 2018 GLC300W is already pretty tall; I’m kind of one the fence about getting one.

The HUDWAY looks like a cheaper and slightly smaller version of a Navdy, in that both are all-in-one units that mount above the instrument binnacle. Bear in mind also that the HUDWAY is an in-progress Indiegogo campaign, with all of the risks that entails. Navdy, while more expensive, is a product available on Amazon now.
Another option is the Hudly, a projection unit that mounts up near the top of the windshield. From investigating options about a year ago for my previous vehicle, these were the best two I found. There are video reviews of both available on YouTube. None of the aftermarket units are going to look nearly as sleek as the integrated factory HUD, but you'll have to decide for yourself whether you like the look or not.
