2020 GLC 300 Engine Oil and ?particulate filter

The M264 & engines of it's ilk are designed to operate on low SAPS oils. Earlier gas engines are not. (less aggressive cams now etc. etc.) Low SAPS oils are still a bit of a compromise. They sacrifice a little engine protection for the sake of the emissions system. The M264 series engines should run on MB-Approved 229.51, 229.52, 229.61, 229.71. products. (229.5 products would give better engine protection but be hard on the emissions gear)
With the huge new listing of different category low SAPS oils from ACEA plus US Dexos 1, Dexos1 Series 2 & Dexos 2 describing the products would do nothing but confuse people that are not tribologists to no avail whatever. Finding the correct products on the shelf is difficult enough.
While under warranty it is crucial that you let the dealer service the vehicle with the correct oil. Don't want any arguments about potential claims.
What us oil company types are recommending for maximum engine life with low SAPS products is that you don't go for the manufacturer's extended drain interval. No need to change the oil filter at half distance but just change the oil at half the recommended interval.
This is an example of the product you should use & is available and at a fair price. Trust this helps

I have a 2019 GLC 300 4matic (274 engine) with 22,000 miles. Driven on average 3 times a week.each time over 100 miles mostly "interstate" in CT and MA. I do the oil changes myself.
What oil(s) and oci do you recommend. I hope to keep car "forever".
Thank you,
Quite simply ZDDP is reduced but oil basestock groups and additive package can be juiced up to compensate .
VW make it simple and have a universal dual spec oil that can do 3 - 10 cylinder petrol and diesels .
And that oil out performs MB too !

There are so many scary stories when dealers didn't change or used wrong type oil on OM642 BT and engines were seized,
owners had no luck proofing dealers fault. and cars were last for good.
So I decided to do it myself (keep receipts) by using OM filter and recommended spec for oil, used Liqui Moly 2331 Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 Engine Oil which is 229.5
Attaching the oil report after 4.3K. Looks like engine is well protected and oil can go longer, next time I'm planning to change it at 5.5K and do another test.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Mobile 1 ESP 5W-30.
Is that good for Canada? is 5W-30 the best SAE grade?
As for the manual, it says use lowest SAE viscosity, so is that saying to use smaller number SAE grade? like grade 30(e.g. 5w30) is better than 40(e.g 0W40). My understanding is that oil with bigger number is thicker, so smaller number is thinner so that can achieve better fuel consumption.
Copying from the 2020 GLC manual(USA & Canada):
All models 229.51, 229.52, 229.61, 229.71*
*Recommended for lowest possible fuel consumption (lowest SAE viscosity class in each case; observe possible restrictions of the approved SAE viscosity classes).
To achieve the lowest possible fuel consumption, it is recommended to use the engine oil specifications marked in the table for the lowest SAE viscosity class. Possible restrictions of the approved SAE viscosity classes must be observed.

So to compare the two oils, the 0w40 will flow better at lower temperature and will protect better at high temperature. However, due to its thicker viscosity at high temperature you will have more pumping loss making the car overall slightly less fuel efficient. I don't remember the exact numbers but I think they are within the margin of 1% to 2%. I believe the 0W-20 is also MB approved if you really want to be as fuel efficient as possible. However, I would take the hit on fuel economy and use higher viscosity oil for better protection as long as it meets requirements.
Grade is a crude measurement anyway as between the two can be a tiny half or full centiStoke.
Of course you can have a higher quality 30 grade that's has higher anti wear than a 40 grade .
On paper the Mobil 1 ESP Formula should be a very complete oil ( many top oil performance peramiters ) with all those specs .
For the above list, https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.52_de.html, it seems Mobil 1 ESP x3 0W-40 is better comparing to ESP 5W-30
- it flows better when the engine is cold, especially in Canada winter
- anti wear is better when engine is running at regular temperature
I prefer engine protection over fuel efficiency of coz. However, Mobil 1 ESP x3 0W-40 seems only available in Europe?
In the end as long as the oil is on the bevo page ( and yes Mobile-1 ESP 5W30 is there ) they can't claim any warranty issues - still it would be nice to find the best oil for our climate - in my previous C300 I used Mobil-1 0W40, and never had any issues.

I called the dealer part department, what they are using and selling is Mobil 1 5w40, 229.5 (NOT 229.52), they said one oil fit all Mercedes cars including AMG models regardless new and old. It is 1 litre per container. I will go and check it out when purchase the oil filter and drain washer there. But I do not think I will get the oil from dealership as it is not 229.52.

Right now the Mobile-1 ESP is on sale at $35 for 4.8l till end of today - may order it on-line and pick up in store on Fri. and return it if I end up selecting something else ( thinking of Motul 8100 X-Clean+ that I might be able to pickup locally ).
Here is a link to a video of a fellow that has done some
On a related topic, I have not found any videos of people doing the oil changes on the 264 - some on 274 and that involves disconnecting the air intake - in 264 looks like there are pull pins on the turbo intake that need to be removed to get to the oil filter. Have spoken to a friend mechanic and he suggested that there are O-rings there, and his recommendation was to change them when doing the oil change - since the 2020 are under warranty I suspect very few people are doing their own oil changes - if one knows of a video or some good pictures please let me know.
Right, 2019 C300 has same engine and requirement for the oil. I would only use brand Mobil 1 as even dealer is using this brand though.
Yes, it is on sale now in CT, it will end by next Wed though in ON, not yesterday.
DIY oil change would not automatically void the warranty, I believe.

However, it is pretty easy and almost the same as 274 GLC, although I spent a few hours to figure it out. Fun fun. I will post some pictures in my thread about this.
using this, same I have been using for years on all the Mercedes vehicles I have owned or still do
and did the oil change and filter on the new one at 1400Km on our own about a week ago

P.S. Sorry for the double post above - it looked like my first post was not submitted - not sure if that happens often.
I bought the same oil as yours and planned to use it. Until seeing this thread and did some research, I returned those oil.
One of my theory(it might be wrong) is that as it is turbo engine, the exhaust air would go back into the engine, so Mobil 1 ESP, cleaner oil, maybe good for the engine.

seems even this dealership don’t know or don’t care, if it’s .5 or .51
I at least changed it at around 1500Km, not the 5 or 10 thousand mark as they suggest for the first oil change, and I am leasing this thing....lol
