Quick response from RJ - just trying to wrap my head around the process and how it works, need for multiple activations, etc.

Ok anyone who got the dash cam activated. Today for the second time ever I got an on air update on my MBUX not maps. Some extra features came with it. The thing is I got the dash cam activated by coding and before I could only access it in the app section. After the patch update the dash cam is now on the assistance section of settings. Anyone who got it noticed that? Good to know that even that I got the dash cam function by coding the system updated it like it came activated from the factory as an added option.

That looks like the traffic light view, not dashcam. Upload a picture of the Assistance section?

How do you know you got an OTA update that wasn't maps? What other features did you get?

Will the activation of the dashcam void the warranty? Can you deactivate the dashcam before bringing the car back for service?

I really want this feature as all the hardware is already build in. No need to run and hide the cable.

Thanks.

As the 2021 GLC has this as a $200 option, I wonder if MB will offer it to 2020 owners if they have the correct equipment already installed? I would gladly pay the $200 to activate this option, as I don't feel comfortable going through an outside source. According to my GLC's license/software section, it says that it's deactivated. If we could purchase the app, I would think it would be a simple OTA update to activate it?

my dealership said NO.....but would not explain why...

no worries I put in a dual camera setup from BlackVue, easy to do, easy to remove and put into the next vehicle

No one knows anything. It's a very taboo topic for some reason.
I think it'll happen eventually. No reason not too - they would make more money.

How easy would installation of the BlackVue be? Would I need to remove parts of the headliner and tap into the vehicle's power? I'm not particularly handy with this sort of thing, and wouldn't want to create a problem of my own doing.

I would think so too. If you have the correct cameras already installed, it can't be that difficult to enable this, especially since it's now an option for the 2021's. I'd prefer to go this route even if it just records the front as it wouldn't require any more than an SD card, so no hardwiring of any accessories.

I think MB is disabling the camera for privacy reasons
The camera is there, used for AR navi purposes. They even have an app, but it is not enabled in most countries.

if you are not handy then I don’t suggest you doing it, it’s about 2 hours to do a nice job, headliner and such is not removed, but you need to know how to fish the wire and tuck it into the pillars and so on, plus you need to run the wire to the back camera and through the hinge area, and of course the power requirements.

I would have used the built in system as well ,but dealer said no to activating it, and the BlackVue I had from my previous car, so I reused, and kept the 200 bucks in my pocket.

not sure what a shop would charge for install of a BlackVue, but it might be around the 200 bucks that Mercedes wants to charge for activating the on board, mind you you still need to buy the BlackVue, but like I did you can move it from car to car..

It seems that used to be the case, but they are now offering this feature in my country (US) for the 2021 model year for $200.

Built in Dash Cam Activation
Quote: I’ve found a person who will code remotely for only $140. He’ll send you a dongle once the payment was received and will unlock 5 features with the $140. Extra features $25. The guy Max Yao wanted to charge me $3,000. Yes that right 3 grand. Are you kidding me? If any is interested I’ll send you the info. If you want the dash cam your Mbux system must be the premium one that comes with the Parker Nvidia chip. There are some who have the lower spec chip even if they have augmented reality. If you don’t have the Parker nvidia chip even if he code the dash cam won’t work.
Can you please send me the contact for this person? I'd like to get my Dash Cam Activated.

Thanks.

It's in this thread above, here is his website.
https://www.rjautomotive.net/

I emailed with him in January, he said he does not have dash cam ready. Words to the effect otherwise in this thread are not correct. He forecasted this month, February. I myself also await that. I figured I'd follow up with him in a few weeks.

Quote: Hi All,
Im not sure why it has been said that we can activate Dashcam, we are receiving a lot of enquirers regarding this. However currently we do not offer Dashcam activation just yet and are hoping to have it ready in between 4-8 weeks.
As for all other coding we can do it all remotely no matter where you are in the world, and I am sure you have seen our contact details anove.
Thank you

I have a '21 GLC 43 with the dashcam option. A few notes:

- Buy your own USB drive. It requires a USB-C one but an office supply store will sell one for $20 (in my case $24 for a 128GB from Staples).
- I've only played with it slightly, but the one MB gives you is pretty obtuse. You need to start recording every time you start the vehicle. Yep, you read that right.
- There are two recording options. Paraphrasing, but you get looped recording and FIFO that will not over-write older recordings.
- When the dashcam is active, there is a rather large (very eye catching) red symbol in the upper-left corner of the MBUX screen (right next to the home button), so it's impossible to miss that you're recording.
- The image quality is excellent, both in pixel density and color accuracy.

I am located in the US and purchased this vehicle in the US (Philly area).

Hope this helps.

@Zausner thank you for that feedback. I think I was aware of most of that, but the red-symbol I definitely didn't know about. Appreciate that info about the image quality. I already bought a USB-C stick ready for all this...I just need someone to enable it!

What happens if you use the AR navigation feature while recording?

RJ - thanks for posting this. I inquired back on November 25th and got a quick response from you. I have been waiting for you to code the dash cam functionality before I follow through with you more.

Here is what you sent me then:

Nothing, as far as I can tell. No augmentation comes up on the recording and the recording continues.

Hopefully you have NOT had the "opportunity" to check this out, but I have heard that it will auto enable if the car is parked and bumped (i.e. hit by another vehicle or something) to attempt to record the accident.

So when the system tells you to make a turn, for example, no live-feed with blue arrows pops up like it would normally?

I did try that (that was my primary use case.... I park at a train station/park and ride quite a bit). Did the 'old hip check of a door and bounced the car a bit. I got the MB Me app notification but the dashcam didn't do squat. I also put the dog inside (thus setting off the interior alarm) and still didn't activate the dashcam. Annoyed my dog though. :-)

The augmentation displays on the screen and elsewhere in the car, but not on the dashcam recording.
