What oil to use?

My 2018 GLC 300 is coming up for the Service A. I am a Certified Mechanic with a lift in my garage, so Paying MB $300 to basically change my oil isn’t going to happen. I went to MB and got their filter and copper drain plug gasket, and now I am looking for the MOBIL 1 5w40 to use. I cannot find it. I can find 0w40, or 5w40 Diesel oil, but that’s it.

I see some Euro parts houses sell Leichtlauf High Tech 2331 and Liqui Moly 20230 New Generation oils but I have no experience with either.

I am looking for some feedback from you DIY’s. What are you using? I am not sure about substituting 0w40 for the recommended 5w40, just to use MOBIL 1.
So please sound off with you feedback on what oils you are using. Thanks for your help in advance.

I don’t understand you are a Certified Mechanic and your asking on a forum what oil to use......

if you can’t find the oil at any of your local stores your looking for, purchase it at the dealership, they usually stock what they put into the vehicles, and if they sell you the wrong stuff and you have catastrophic failure, blame them....

just my 2 cents

.

Check your owner's manual and/or this Mercedes website for the MB approval code for your car's engine oil, and then find an oil with the same approval code.

https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...&language_id=1

There is a Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 engine oil that has the MB 229.5 approval code.

Thanks for your ARROGANT input Gatekeeper. I'm not sure whose Gate you are keeping, but it sure isn't mine. I suppose you are so perfect you never ask for others opinions. Sorry I even asked!

I have used Fuchs oil in my MB's for years. I order it through North side Imports, they are a distributor with a number of outlets around the country.

This place is a joke.
Like Gatekeeper was nice enough to advise you, take your certified mechanic self back to the dealership and buy the oem MB oil. You've already wasted one trip.

Ask your dealer.

jmelomg,
I agree with you that Mobil 5W40 is impossible to find. I'm in Connecticut. Advance Auto has Mobil 0W40. The 5w40 I found there was Valvoline..

Good luck

really, you got upset as well, not sure why, nothing was said to you at all

you don’t think a Certified Mechanic should know the answer to the question he posted, like I said he should be educating us, not the other way around.

Liqui Moly are very high quality oils, if you can get your hands on the right one I would highly recommend the brand

If your GLC300 is gas and has the MB oil spec 229.5 you can use Castrol 0W40 or Mobil 1 0W40 which are both readily available, are very good oils and are not expensive. I used the the Castrol 0W40 in my 2017 GLC300. You can purchase the oil off of Amazon or Walmart has it as well. You can also purchase your oil filter (which the OEM filter is made by Mann) off of online sites as well. I used RMeuropean for air and oil filter purchases.

Your mom needs to educate you better.

A certified mechanic is a very broad term. What if this is their first experience with euro cars?
He already said in OP, and I quote:

"I am not sure about substituting 0w40 for the recommended 5w40"

He did some research before posting and his only question to this ****ty community was:

"So please sound off with you feedback on what oils you are using."

He didn't ask your opinion on his certification. You are just being obnoxious. You had nothing to add to this thread.

Defending OP man. He's probably not a mechanic for euro cars. That much I know man...

That is the weight that Mercedes uses factory, but there is multiple grades that meet that spec that you can use. Here is a list of oils that meet that spec <https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html>. I now have a 2020 GLC43 that I use the Castrol 0W40 oil in. The 0W40 euro oils meet OEM specs for MB, Porsche & VW. The Castrol is like $23 for a 5 quart jug on Amazon.

There will be more replies as the platform ages and more do it yourselfers are on this sub forum. I bought a used 2009 ML350 and gained a ton of knowledge off of that sub forum. I've always done my own maintenance and enjoy it. Just keep all of your receipts and I have a spreadsheet that I document my maintenance on and I have never had a problem with my local dealer on doing my own maintenance.
