2017 GLC 43 - downsizing 20" tires to 275 and 245?

2017 GLC 43 - downsizing 20" tires to 275 and 245?

I have the stock 20" goodyear eagle run-flat tires, 285/40R20 and 255/45R20

There are literally zero options for all-season tires in that size, besides the very expensive goodyears

But if I downsized to 275/40R20 and 245/45R20, all my options open up. Looks like the diameter of each would only be 0.3 inches smaller.

Has anybody done that? Any potential issues with this idea?

USA here in case that matters

sounds like it should be fine since you would still be within 3% of the original diameter. Potential drawback might be less sidewall bead protection since the narrower tires will need to stretch out 0.5" more across the width of your stock rims.

Another interesting alternative, I found a 2017 GLC 43 for sale where they replaced all 4 tires with the same size - the sales guy told me they were 265/45R20 all round

Be careful. Use a rim & tire calculator, found on most tyre selling sites.
Your cars computer and safety systems, including auto transmission and 4Matic system may be voided.
Speed on dash may be higher, or lower, based on revolutions as well. MB spends $$$$$ in deciding tyre size - you might be better off buying 19” or 18” rims designed for the GLC, with correct ET and offset and buy cheaper tyres from a larger manuf range.
You could dump runflats and fit non run flats, several companies sell them.
I cannot believe there is only ONE tyre left in the USA that meets GLC specs.
Good luck, consider different rim sizes, just be careful re your transmission, etc.

Based on this chart I should be ok, either alternative will be within 1-1.5% difference in diameter from stock.

Also another poster on the mercedes subreddit put the downsize option, and linked a picture. It's hard to tell any difference from stock: https://www.reddit.com/r/mercedes/co...nge_tire_size/

Picture from user who put 275/40R20 and 245/45R20 combo (source reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/mercedes/co..._size/i0bkjqs/)

I can't really tell any noticeable difference in appearance from stock.

I messaged him on Reddit. If these are the same stock wheels as I have on my 2020 43, I'm buying these tires immediately. F run-flats!

This is great news!! I just called TireRack and placed an order over the phone (the new 285/40/20 size is NOT on their website yet). Even though Michelin is saying they're out in May, the TireRack guy thinks the order will be shipped to me in the next week or two because TireRack has placed a large order of them.

Total price I paid for front and rear (255/45/20 and 285/40/20) was $1465.87. It'll cost me an additional $100-125 to have them installed at a PepBoys or some place like that.

Can't wait to get rid of these awful run-flats!

Tim,
Thanks for the quick response, glad to hear you are happy with them! Just got off the phone with Tire Rack and am ready to order. My bad with the name!, yes I meant the CrossClimate2's. I noticed they have 285/45/R20 and 255/50/R20 with a higher aspect ratio, it calculates out to about 1" higher sidewall, do you think that might be too high? Looking for more sidewall 'cause our roads here really suck! My truck rides better... Nice ride Tim, tires look good, like the color, ended up with Cardinal red this time, last two cars where Lunar Blue.

I suggest keeping the stock size...I know it's only 1 inch, but from a cursory look around the front wheel on mine, the clearances are already pretty tight!

Thanks, just got the same advice from Tire Rack. Discount Tire does not have them in stock as of today (claim May 1).

I agree, I would stick with stock size. In addition to clearance problems, changing tire sizes can throw off the car's internal sensors and trigger warning lights. Not saying it WOULD happen, but once you put the tires on and drive em off the lot there's no takebacks. And yeah, Tire Rack has them now, other places are still saying not available. Good luck - they're worth it!

Just had the new tires installed yesterday, could tell a difference right-a-way, better "ride" not as choppy/harsh. Our roads suck sooo bad, they maintain to stagecoach level! Can't attest to handling performance, haven't taken any "high speed open road" trips yet. will let U know. I am curious what psi folks are using for the non-run flats? Discount Tire used 39/42 psi same as the door jam numbers.

Glad you like the new tires! I've put a couple hundred miles on mine now, and after being broken in they seem to soften up just a touch more, which I love. I'm running 38/40, but not on purpose - that's just where they happen to be at the moment. I'd stick with the 39/42 as your baseline and top off the air whenever needed. I'm so happy with how my car rides now - thanks, Michelin!
