NEW AMG OWNER - 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43

21 September, 2025

I also posted this in New Owner/New Member thread so pls forgive repetition ;-)

Hello all. Well, I converted from decades of Audi's to the Benz Family. So they are new to me and appreciate any insight on my 2020 AMG GLC 43. I enjoyed the Audi forums so hope for keen info from the community. I am in Halifax Nova Scotia but born in Connecticut. 55 years old.

I have never really had an ultra-performance car, the AMG fits that bill. I've had 3.0L but not with all the presets/options this car seems to come with. I pick it up on Tuesday and will explore all these settings (Sport+, etc ). It has 68k miles, I paid $30K. Very clean, Black on Black with all bells and whistles. Seemed low compared to others here but this had the highest mileage. I know this will cost $$$ to maintain and am prepared for that. I likely will sell in 3 years once I have this out of my system !

*** ANY ADVICE - please please - I am not a gear head and dont know much about cars s- ANY ADVICE on this car is so APPRECIATED - from simple to complex, please share your experiences, what you have learned, what you know, etc . THANK YOU !!!!!
Simple things like how to drive it (hard or ?), unique things to

this car I should know of or look for?, how does it burn oil, best setting for city driving, ????

1. Will the mid-grade gas work or do I need to go all in for ultra-grade? I do ¾ highway driving, ¼ city driving.

2. Do I really need snow tires for highway driving (sometimes while actively snowing ...) with the 4Matic AMG system? I mean for safety I have no problem getting a set but just want to know more on this setup as I came from Quattro.

3. Emotion Start - I have been reading a lot on line but not tried in actual car. Is this a thing for my model and how do I do it?

RIDE ON !! SO excited !!!

My pleasure, you will love this vehicle, the M276 engine is actually one of MB's most reliable engine.

As for maintenance, depending on how long you end up keeping it, here are the things to look out for https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...sing-used.html

The GLC 43 has air suspension right, that is another thing that can fail.

M276 does have some minor issues such as leaking valve covers, infamous startup rattle (camshaft adjuster) although that is on very early model years and a common issue across the range of MB engines is leaking oil in harness that eventually destroys the ECU. The preventative measures can be taken such as installing pigtails and replacing them often.

If you DIY, just do your own oil change, very easy and can siphon do reocommend going down there to check for leaks if any every other service though for peace of mind.

The newer engines from then on will not be as reliable due to environmental, regulations and complexity of hybridization such as mild and full hybrid, in MB's case, E Performance. Although it might be too early to tell.

Look up crabbing. If your in the snow a lot, you'll likely experience it. Its annoying.

I think the crabbing issue was only on right-hand drive models, and was the pre-2020 refresh. Mine has zero crabbing.

Also, I've been fine with Michelin Cross Climate 2s, which are all-season tires. Granted I'm in Seattle where it doesn't snow often, but when it does we get thick ice under the snow and I've had zero issues getting around the few times I've driven in it.

Yes to premium gas.

My biggest complaint is the pause between when you hit the accelerator from a slow roll to when the car actually moves. It's quite long and super dangerous, so you'll have to adjust what kind of gap you need to enter traffic. Seriously, be careful.

My US 21 with PS4s does it when its wet or in the snow. Luckily, tge car has turned into a modded toy so it doesnt see tgat weather anymore... but it def still did it.

I find the main cause of it is the oil pump solenoid switching from low pressure to normal pressure mode. That said, unplugging it is experimental. https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...solenoids.html

Yep, I've considered that 'fix' a lot of times, and people say it shouldn't theoretically hurt anything, but man am I hesitant to do something like that. Fooling around with very expensive engines makes me super nervous.

I understand your concern. Anyways, I did have it unplugged, I am not trying to persuade you to do it, do what you are comfortable with.

Very happy with our 18 GLC43 coupe Just about to hit 100,000km and has been hassle free. We have a bit of a tune on it which gives it a little more bark. It does crab a little bit in the driveway at low speed but nothing to concerning I don’t think. I have unplugged the oil solenoid in my 63 M157 engine and will be doing it in the 43 next service or when I have it up in the air.
Has to be better for the engine overall I think.

GLC 43 Coupe
Here are a couple of items from my 2020 GLC 43 Coupe experience over the past couple of years. It's been a great vehicle so far. Mine came with the Continental ContiSportContact 5 UHP summer tires (255/40/21 & 285/35/21). I experienced terrible crabbing in temps below 70F. I just had them replaced with Continental DWS06 Plus all season tires (265/40 & 295/35) and that solved the crabbing issue entirely.
As for brake pads, the OEM brake pads shed a lot of brake dust. When it was time to replace brake pads, I had the Brembo brake pads installed. They have great stopping power and brake feel and much less brake dust.
