[EDITED now that this claim has been proven false.]
Do you have the tow package? The dealer told me (not personally verified) that the motion sensor doesn't work (or gets disconnected?) if you have the tow package with hitch receiver. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

I do have a tow package but it still works. Just not every time. It’s getting better. I think I just need to get used to it.

Not correct! I have the tow package and mine has worked every time I have tried it by kicking just right of the hitch. That’s about 5 times so not a big sample.

Good to know, I stand corrected! How am I not surprised that the salesman was mistaken (or maybe his comments were based on previous model experience but Mercedes changed or improved sensitivity with the latest generation GLE?).

2014 E350 & 2020 GLE350
I have tow package on 2020 GLE 350 and kick activation works on both sides of hitch.
Info in Operating Manual, page 77-79. Practice a little.
Also works to close tailgate.
I am a little concerned about comment in manual on page 78 stating: NOTE: Vehicle damage due to unintentional opening of the tailgate "when using an automatic car wash" !
"Deactivate KEYLESS-GO or make sure that the key is located at least 10 ft away from the vehicle in such situations." REALLY???
Pretty hard to do in a "ride through" car wash!!

If you mean disable the keyless entry for theft deterrent you double click the lock button. Then double click later to reactivate. I haven’t tested it to see if it works on this model. I just saw this in a news feed. The idea is to stop crooks with electronic simulation devices from gaining entry to use keyless go.

page 68 in 2020 GLE 350 ops manual. "Double click in quick succession the
"lock" symbol" on key fob. You will see the red "low battery" light flash twice and come on solid for a few seconds.
To re-activate, press "unlock or lock" symbol again.
I just tried it and it works as advertised.
I feel better that at least I can "deactivate smart key" before I run it through the car wash so that the rear tail gate will not open. My wife would kill me
if I called her and told her that the tailgate unintentionally opened inside the car wash!!
