MBUX Failure

Yesterday on a road trip, I was using the navigation (which sucks by the way), and stopped to top off the fuel tank. After getting back in and starting the car, the navigation screen was stuck in a blank screen with a prompt that said "Initializing Navigation". There was also no music and when I attempted to switch to audio, it said "Tuner unavailable". I tried waiting it out (10 minutes), also tried turning off and restarting the car. Luckily I had familiarized myself with how to get access to the negative terminal of the battery under the drivers seat and stored a small metric toolkit in the spare tire well. After disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting it, everything came back to life. It even resumed navigation and the XM channel I was listening to. After an initial bad experience with this car, I was beginning to really enjoy it. My confidence in the overall reliability and build quality of this car is in the toilet. It's my first Mercedes and will likely be my last. I should change my screen name from Lucky 777 to Unlucky 350.

Wow!! What is going on with the build quality of Mercedes. I can't count how many Mercedes I have owned since 1973 and they have all been bullet proof. I hardly ever even had any warranty issues. My 2018 43AMG has been perfect. I hope this does not bode well for the 53AMG SUV that I have on order. We shall see!

It's pretty bad when I feel compelled to carry a tool kit in a brand new high end car...and laughable that I actually needed it!

No surprise. Just finished reading a long term review on the GLE 450 and the writer had issues with MBUX navigation. If you think about how many years it took PC makers to work the bugs out of windows os, do we really think MBUX is going to be flawless. No way, it will likely take a generation to iron out all the wrinkles. AND yes, the new navigation system is horrible. But that big screen sure looks nice and colorful! Wonderful tech.

Navigation shouldn't be that hard, Navteq and TomTom are the two big suppliers, it's a technology that's pretty well matured. The displays are nice. I've not seen anything on what technology they're using but judging by the black levels and viewing angle, it's either OLED or micro LED.

Likely due to all the ancillaries running simultaneously while managing the vehicle systems at the same time. Perhaps trying to do too much. Navigation in the previous command system worked fine, I never had issues.

Took my 2020 GLE350 in for a "A" service (its one years old) and they reinstalled the MBUX software. Now all data stored on the original system is GONE...radio presets, profiles, nav history etc. etc. Do you think a battery reboot as you did will bring back the data?

Nope...it's probably gone. Shame on your service advisor for not backing up your data or at the very least, advising you to do it before you brought the car in. You can back up your settings to a usb drive and restore them after a system wipe. I just had a pellet stove installed a few weeks ago and it came with a usb drive with instructions on how to back up my settings. You'd think if a $4k wood stove can come with this, a $70k+ car could...

Spoke with the service manager today and he said they are aware the system wipes out the data but their policy is to have the service writer inform the customer before they do it. They just forgot to tell me.
He also said there is no way to save the data before they reload the software. I'll check with MBZ about that if I can find a who and where the person to whom I should speak. Any ideas who/where?

You'll spend less time and experience less frustration just taking a half hour out in the driveway reentering your settings.

IMO, the Mercedes support staff are just PR with very little product knowledge. They will refer you to the Dealer so….

Had the same thing happen to me. You have to re-sync your phone/Mercedes me account to the car.

Was that successful for all your settings?
You'd think the dealer would share that info.

Went to test drive the GX model yesterday. It looks like the first year it came out other than the front grill. The driver's **** pit is similar to a comparing the old pong game to new video games. Has not changed since 2014. It is a reliable care but boy is it dated!! SA said it is due for facelift in 2022 - maybe.

My wife’s RX 350 had several issues even with a low Tech Infotainment system. The squeaky Steering column was working as designed but they applied grease numerous times that only helped for a few weeks…Water pump…several Firmware fixes.
Lexus scores higher than most by staying behind the Tech curve and most of all they don’t make changes during a Gen’s 6-7 year life…unless safety related or minor things at refresh. The 2016 RX Redesign had several issues that took 2 years to resolve…like the gurgling cooling system and erratic acceleration/surging. It’s a percentage thing-if yours works they are great-if not, what a POS.
The Tundra still has basically the same body/power train in 2021 as in 2007 except for minor front end sheet metal in 2014, but interiors evolved.

Sorry, got a new iPhone and was off line for a while. Yes, everything came back after the resync including the photo I used for my profile.

I'm curious to know which headunit you have mbux 548 or 549 as the 549 is better SOC

I'm not sure which hardware version I have. That being said, this post is almost two years old and after some initial problems, the car has been virtually trouble free.

I'm documenting these failures was your headunit 548 or 549 if you have Augmented reality the you 4 sure do but if you don't doesn't necessarily mean you don't check your spec sheet should say under the code

I have had the same thing happen to me. After leaving it in my garage overnight, I got up the next day and everything was working fine. Asked dealer to check and they couldn't find any fault codes.

I have had my MBUX screen go completely blank several times, and one time I lost audio but could see the station info on the screen. I found that if I turned the vehicle off and opened and closed the driver's side door, after 5-10 minutes a red triangle would light in my driver's side mirror (the triangle that lights when something is in your blind spot). At that point I can start the vehicle, and everything works ok. I found this by accident while sitting in the vehicle playing games on my phone waiting for my wife to come out of a store.
