So the new GLE has the USB-C in the front tray next to the wireless charging cradle - I’m guessing that this or any alternate “wireless CarPlay” must be plugged in at that single location and no other like in the arm rest port.

that’s correct; there are 2 ports there and you need to use left hand one. These devices essentially emulate a phone to the car.
Personally I find that once one of these types of devices is plugged in there I don’t use that charging area anyway, if I need to charge the phone when on the move I just plug it in under the armrest.
I read some reviews for these devices on other model forums and it’s not reliable based on those reports.
I am seeing the same reports. I will pass as I don't want to crowd the space there. Hoping wireless CarPlay is made available this year via an MBUX update.
Yeah this feature or lack thereof caught me off guard. I just assumed it would be available since my BMW has it.
Anyone know for sure if it can simply be updated to enable this or is it hardware related? It does require a wifi connection to the car. Is MB introducing wireless CarPlay in any upcoming releases?
Another thing that caught me off guard was the lack of a track forward and back button. My Audi had the same issue although they have since added it.

It is available on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class which was the first one to include MBUX. Not sure what or why the rest of the Classes don't offer it natively.

Swipe the leading edge of the touchpad left or right. There are arrows down there. Works on my Android.
It also looks like there's an altercation between Apple, Waze and Google maps.
Not to mention the altercation between Waze and Google maps themselves.
So the agreement between Apple and the automakers may be in for revisions. Android too. Who knows what the future will bring....
