Disable tailgate from opening with key fob

Is there a way to turn off the tailgate from opening when you press the key fob? Worried about it opening and hitting the garage by accident. I can just push the emblem to open or swipe my foot when shopping. Can't find anything definitive. Thanks.

I don't know if you can disable the key fob button but you can set the max opening by lowering the tailgate to the desired height and holding the close button (on the tail gate) until it beeps once. After that, it will always raise to that height. You can still manually push it all the way open. If you want to reset it back to the original height, just hold the same button until it beeps twice.

. A great ideal - Thanks. Since I back my Mercede into the garage, I placed a strip of colored tape on the garage floor away from the back wall, so when the red line shown in the backing camera covers the tape, I know the vehicle has cleared the garage door. Works every time.

My wife also backs her GLE into our garage and what she does is puts the car in Drive and looks at the front camera to see if the front of the car cleared the line between the driveway and garage floor. So far she hasn't had any accidents.

I wish there were... my rear hatch has opened at least twice while getting out of the car in my garage causing the hatch to hit the garage door and scratching the paint off...I believe it was because the open hatch button on the fob was accidentally pushed as I got out of the car and the hatch fob button was pushed in my pant pocket by something else in my pocket... I've learned not to close the garage door until i get out of the car.

^^ For now and it works I bought a piece of pipe foam at Lowe's and placed it where it would hit on the protruding edge if it does happen. This way I won't scratch the paint.

This place is a joke.
Is your garage that small or do you have a bunch of junk in front of your car? Maybe time to declutter! You can't even walk behind your car with the door closed(?)

We're okay with clearance in the garage.

A bigger concern for me, is that buttons on the AMG fob can be pushed while I'm just working around the house. And the tailgate opens.
I usually put the back of the key facing outward in my pocket, but not always..

So let's say I go to the dentists office. I'd like to disarm the fob without taking the battery out, so I don't open the tailgate for all the world to see. Or any other time I'm away from home, for that matter.

Does anybody know of is a trusted programmer who could tell the car to ignore the fob?

Pretty much standard size and no clutter in the front as I have a workbench there. I purposely park just in front of the workbench bench mat for the most amount of room. It's also positioned perfectly to hit the foam in case the hatch does accidentally open.

Like the stripe placement. 🙂

It doesn't solve the problem when I'm out to dinner or away from home. I come out and it's open for anyone to take whatever they want. Typically, I have my work laptop back there.

OP posted about damage hitting the garage door with the hatch accidentally opening. Backing in solves that issue. in 4 years with two GLE’s I’ve never once had my hatch open accidentally so some Fobs must be more sensitive than others. Mine does lock and unlock the doors occasionally when I’m wearing tight fitting jeans.

There is a way to disable the key fob NFC unlocking function...instructions in manual. It doesn’t disable the buttons on the Fob though, they still work. It might be worth discussing this with the Dealer to see if there is an option to disable the hatch button. There could be a sensitivity level requiring that the button be pressed longer to open. I just sold my GLE so I can’t test it but I think mine required holding the button for one second+ to open.

It's more tedious to back the car in and additionally I don't care for the exhaust fumes that linger in the garage once you pull out and leave.

Random idea, what if you guys bought an RFID blocking key-fob case?
I see a few on amazon, not sure if there are any made to fit the MB key fob specifically.

It would block all signals from the keyfob as long as the keyfob is in the case.

probably would work but then the car would not be able to detect the key.

Yea it'd be a tradeoff. You'd have to remove the key from the case when you actually want to unlock the door by touching the handle and when you want to start the car.

I think something simple (eg, non-residue tape) wrapped around the bottom half of the key would work too, and probably not affect the other functionality.

I also faced this same problem, tailgate opened by itself (2023 EQA), but I had the wallet in the same pocket where the key was. I noticed that tailgate indeed can be opened very far away even inside the house and car is in the parking lot 20-30m from the house. I created a video how to disbale the tailgate button. Hope this is usefull, atleast works for me.

I thought Mercedes did a fix with this by doing a double tap. I'll try to find it.

Here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...31032-0001.pdf

Complaint Tailgate opens unintentionally.

Cause Accidental or unnoticed activation of the button to open the tailgate on the vehicle key. E.g. when stored in trouser pocket, handbag etc.

Remedy As of the 6th generation, the vehicle key can be recoded so that the tailgate no longer opens as a result of a long press on the button, but by double-clicking on the button instead

I'll try the double-click option when I get home. Don't want to be stuck at work with a non-functioning key fob. Also, I noticed that the PDF states the cost of this work at dealership is to be charged to customer. - That is so caring of them - LOL.
