GLE 450e drive mode EL when Hybrid (H) selected

driver manual implies EL is standard mode and H is route dependent but does not explain how to select route dependent vs standard. I would rather be under control of drive mode vice software control
Can anyone to help? Two questions here-EL vs H explain and how select EL over H or vice versa as car defaults to EL when turning on ignition. This might be an easy answer since only had the car 4 weeks. Why EL in driver display when H is selected in mbux center display. And if software selects EL as standard mode and H selected in route based mode how does one control standard vs route based

Our GLS doesn't have the issue, but if it did, it would drive me batty. Good luck!

Regen braking should always be enabled. In the EL drive mode, you can adjust the amount of regen using the paddles.
But indeed, the setting isn't remembered. It even resets when you use cruise control, for some unknown reason.

From my experience with owning three non-MB PHEVs from three different automakers, it makes most sense to drive in "Hybrid Hold" mode (or what MB calls "Battery Hold" mode) at highway speeds (i.e., > 45 mph) to keep the traction battery at the same general charge level when driving on long road trips, so as to be able to use all-electric in stop-and-go traffic.

You can see it working on the dash if you select the tachometer display, like so:
The "CHARGE" bar indicates the amount of regen that is being applied.
A neat trick that is great for heavy towing / long mountain passes: if you set the limiter, the system will automatically prefer regen braking, without every touching (and thus overheating) the actual brakes. No need to downshift or anything
