GLE 450e drive mode EL when Hybrid (H) selected

Dealer could not answer question. When I select Hybrid drive mode in mbux center screen the mode indicator on the driver screen goes to “H”. But it later shifts to “EL”. And when first turn on ignition, EL is pn driver screen although mbux selection is hybrid (H). The drivers manual is vague on H vs EL

driver manual implies EL is standard mode and H is route dependent but does not explain how to select route dependent vs standard. I would rather be under control of drive mode vice software control

Can anyone to help? Two questions here-EL vs H explain and how select EL over H or vice versa as car defaults to EL when turning on ignition. This might be an easy answer since only had the car 4 weeks. Why EL in driver display when H is selected in mbux center display. And if software selects EL as standard mode and H selected in route based mode how does one control standard vs route based

I've had my 450E for about 4 months now. I find your question(s) rather difficult to understand but here's what I do after playing around with all the issues you've raised. When I'm driving around town (less than 40 miles a day) I simply stay in the EL mode which I prefer. On the road or on what I know in advance will be an extended trip I drive in the Sports mode and use the supplemental electrical power potential which implements automatically when I occasionally need it such as in passing. In practice about 80% of my trips (not miles) are in the EL mode and the remainder in the Sports mode. As I approach home base (40 ≈miles) and my in garage charger I often finish out the trip in the EL mode. I really don't care what the MPG blend is but my Mercedes Me app tells me I've averaged 69.2 mpg since delivery; that's good enough for me🧐 Life's too short to worry about all the details sometimes. I've been driving GLE's for years now and for me the 450E my favorite model. I love the pace of the regenerative braking in stop and go traffic. I've not had any significant performance issues but the noise of the intermittent extending rear camera which is extensively discussed elsewhere on this forum is a serious defect. I hope there is a programming solution.

This thread, specifically post #44, has a suggestion that may be worth considering:

https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...ml#post8885493

Our GLS doesn't have the issue, but if it did, it would drive me batty. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I do the exact same thing. I am just 2 days old with my 2024 GLE 450e. I am struggling to understand how to enable the Regen Braking on my vehicle. is there any setting I have make it or it is default feature? pl help

Is the "hybrid drive mode" just a display configuration in MBUX maybe? On my 350e it's always in hybrid mode, Sport mode is the only one that doesn't shut off the engine constantly.

I find the Battery Level mode to be better for that, Sports mode changes the gearbox programming and keeps is in a lower gear, which is a bit annoying on long drives.

Regen braking should always be enabled. In the EL drive mode, you can adjust the amount of regen using the paddles.

I don't see that you can adjust the regen braking very much. From what I can see, there's only one extra-regen mode "D-" with the left paddle, and one no-or-little-regen(?) mode "D+" with the right paddle. Or am I missing something? And, in my experience, going into "D-" mode means that the car will brake fairly quickly when you let off on the accelerator pedal (i.e., without touching the brake pedal) at speeds > 40 mph or so, but once you get under about 30 mph, the car just seems to go into "coasting" mode in "D-" mode (meaning you have to apply the brake pedal rather aggressively). This is exactly the opposite of the situation in my Volvo XC60 T8 ER (another PHEV), in which you really have one-pedal driving (the car slows very slowly at speeds > 40 mph, but once you get under 30 mph, it aggressively regen-brakes to a complete stop). Also, in my Volvo, you can set it to stay in "one-pedal" driving (i.e., aggressive-regen mode) automatically every time you start up the car, but in the GLE 450e, I don't think there's a way to do so (unless I'm missing something; i.e., it resets to "D" every time you turn off the car and restart it, as opposed to starting in "D-" mode if you were driving that way previously).

I have D(auto), D--, D-, D, D+. In D-- it'll come to an almost complete stop on regen. But not quite one-pedal driving, no.
But indeed, the setting isn't remembered. It even resets when you use cruise control, for some unknown reason.

So do you know if regen works in "Battery Hold" mode? Have you experimented with all the drive modes to see if regen works better in any of them than in the others, between "Sport", "Hybrid", "Electric", and "Battery Hold"?
From my experience with owning three non-MB PHEVs from three different automakers, it makes most sense to drive in "Hybrid Hold" mode (or what MB calls "Battery Hold" mode) at highway speeds (i.e., > 45 mph) to keep the traction battery at the same general charge level when driving on long road trips, so as to be able to use all-electric in stop-and-go traffic.

Yes, it works in all modes, including "Battery Level".
You can see it working on the dash if you select the tachometer display, like so:

The "CHARGE" bar indicates the amount of regen that is being applied.
A neat trick that is great for heavy towing / long mountain passes: if you set the limiter, the system will automatically prefer regen braking, without every touching (and thus overheating) the actual brakes. No need to downshift or anything

Strange. Maybe a difference in the newer models, or the 450e? My 350e certainly has it.

I tried doing it multiple times also in a 450e, and only got D- ...
I wonder if there's a defect in some 450e vehicles?

Mine only has the D- option as well. In the default AUTO mode there is some regenerative braking present but it is considerably less effective than that of the D- mode. I'm not sure that I would want more regenerative braking than that the D- mode already provides.

The alternative mode of the cruise control, the speed limiter. You can let the car coast down a hill, set the limiter for a max speed, and it'll modulate the regen braking. Pretty neat.

I'm just guessing, but the previous poster was from Europe, and they've had the 'e' for a couple of years vs the USA just starting in 2014 models.

Using paddles on the steering wheel, the driver can customize regenerative braking in three stages: D- mode (most aggressive), D mode (moderate), and D+ mode (coasting). D-AUTO (default) uses the radar sensor to base the amount of recuperation on the traffic situation. To engage, pull and hold one of the paddle shifters until D-AUTO appears. "D--" is not an option to select for regenerative braking.

Is there a way to have a specific mode, Hybrid or Hold mode engage by default when you start the vehicle.
It always starts in EL mode.
