Michelin Tire Noise

My 2024 GLE 450 came with the Michelin Primacy Tour AS tires and 20" wheels. I now have about 22,000 miles on the car. I have noticed a low resonant humming sound that varies with the road surface. It appears to be tire noise. This appears to be a common complaint on Michelin's website where the tire gets a less than stellar 3 stars out of 5 in user reviews.

https://www.michelinman.com/auto/bro...5---50R20-109H

The tires are wearing normally and probably have another 10,000 miles of life left on the tread.

Anyone else have these tires and experienced the same noise? What about the other options such as the Pirelli Scorpion or Continental tires? I expect to be tire shopping this summer. This is the first set of Michelins I have ever been less than pleased with. I had the Pirelli Scorpion AS plus 3 on my BMW X5 and was very happy with those tires. Unfortunately, Pirelli doesn't make that tire in a size for my GLE 450.

I always choose Continental tires for all my cars, seasons, wheels. Until now I have no issues on them for different Continental tire models. I did have your tires and they wore a lot sooner than yours and were noisy. I'm sure others here will dislike Continental and prefer Michelin as well, it would really be up to you test out what is your best tire.

I had factory installed Pirelli P zero MO-S tires on mine because I have the acoustic package. They have some kind of extra foam inside to reduce tire noise. I'm very happy with them after 2,5 years.

Unfortunately, the P Zero is only available as a Summer only tire. I need an all season tire. The Scorpion Zero all season is on my list to look at.

That's true. I have a set of Michelin winter tires and they're noticeably louder than the Pirellis.

Your tires are almost worn out.

Tires make noise when they are almost worn out.

Time is coming soon for you to buy new tires.

Had a GLE450 with those tires. By 30k miles they would hydroplane even though they had 4-5/32's of tread left. I do not recall the sound. I do recall the handling. A new set and it drove like new again. It bothrered me enough that I traded it for a GLE63 which drives and handles so much differently it is difficult to believe they are both similar looking GLE's

Front tires at 7/32 and rears at 6/32. Still have some life left in these tires. I expect to change them this summer. I first noticed the noise at about 10,000 miles. Haven't noticed any hydroplaning or performance issues. Other than the resonant tire cavity noise, the Michelins seem to be a decent tire. Anyone have the Pirelli Scorpion Zeros all season?

Not unusual for Michelins with that kind of mileage on them. At least it's been my experience, even with regular rotations.
Our '24 GLE 580 has those Pirelli's as original equipment, for the 21" staggered wheels. I just put a set of the Michelins Primacy's on my mother-in-law's GLE 450 with the same staggered 21" wheel size - they are better rated. Though they get noisy, they wear longer than the Pirelli's and Conti's, especially on full-time AWD vehicles.

I always gravitate to Michelins, whenever I want to change my tires. When it came to the 21" GLE tires, I did consider the Primacy All-seasons, but since they were all H-rated (there's a V-rated version of this, but not in the GLE staggered sizes), I went with Yokohama X-CVs.

Not sure why your Primacy behaves the way they do, but if you have to replace them, I'd consider the Michelin Pilot Cross-climate2 in the standard 275/50/20 size. These are excellent All-Weather (with the 3 peak symbol) tires, and not just All-Season tires. For my 21s, the Cross-Climate2s were not available in the staggered sizes, and hence I went with the Yokohamas.

I live in Florida and don't really need anything more than all season. I have looked at the cross climate, but cant get past the odd looking tread design. I saw an SUV with those tires the other day and it just didn't look right in my opinion. (I guess I'm a little old fashioned).

I have had the Pirelli Scorpion A/S 3 on cars and highly recommend them. Pirellis are considerably quieter than Michelins IMO.

I had those tires on my 2018 GLE 550e and my BMW X5. They were great tires. Unfortunately they don't come in the 275/50 R20 size

I agree that the tread pattern is certainly different than typical patterns. And if you cannot get past it, then just look for other tires.

Either way, whether it is in FL or not, those are premium Michelin tires, and think of the All-weather aspect as just icing on the cake, since getting a 3-peak mountain rating for a tire, requires a variety of parameters in the tire being above the norm, if the "norm" is a high quality all-season tire. I believe the carcass of the CrossClimate2, is based on the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 (Ultra-High Performance All-Season category), which is a top-notch tire from the Michelin stable.

Another option, which I have on my 21" staggered setup currently (and also available in the 275/50/20 size), is the Yokohama Geolandar X-CV tires. I do like them, even though I would put them overall, a notch below my benchmark, which is the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4.

Note that the Yokohama is an XL-rated, W-speed rated tire (very close to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S or the Cross-climate2s), which is considerably higher than the Michelin Primacy tires, and thus its internal construction would be far superior to the Primacys.

If I recall, that pattern is great at shedding water to prevent hydroplaning in straights and turns, something that you have to deal with in FL during rainstorms.

My 2025 GLE450 came with Michelin Cross Climate tires. They seem to be fine except on one stretch of interstate here that is rough, coarse pavement, then they are very noisy.
