Thumbs up New tires mount at dealer vs 3rd party shop

Hello all,

I am in market to get new tires for my 2016 GLE. Narrowed down to michelin premiers. The dealer is asking for around 1700 including mounting, balancing and alignment. I can get this done for 400-500 less at 3rd party tire shops. Is it worth spending extra 400-500 through the dealer? BTW i have airmatic with active curve

Dealer in my area is sending wheels for tire swap to different tire shop and just add surcharge to it.
As usually with Mercedes, things are not as simple as on Nissan.
You have to check your TPMS will be working after tire swap.
Costco usually is hard to beat for tires. Especially the warranties.

I would shop by price. Any good tire shop can handle TPMS issues, just ask to make sure before you buy. Good luck with your new tires

I use Discount Tire, been going there over 10 years, and only there. The folks at DT really know their stuff too. Highly recommend!

You can find lot of topics about TPMS nightmares when owners took their MB to tire shops not familiar with MB.
Any shop can mount the sensors and I have it done several times, but if you buy the sensors from them - too often they mount wrong sensors and reversing the process becomes pretty expensive.

The first MB dealer I used didn't have a clue about the TPM sensors. I stopped going to them after I had to make a trip back to get a failed one replaced. When I bought the new Bridgestone tires for the GLE, I had the local independent shop (we don't, unfortunately, have Discount Tire here) install them (after confirming that they knew how to deal with the tire pressure sensors). And they all lived happily ever after.

Question about TPMS and future tires for my GL350. Is there a recommended replacement mileage/time for the TPMS wheel mounted sensor for the Mercedes system? I previously had a Honda Odyssey with TPMS purchased new in 2007. I never changed the sensors through 100K miles and third sets of tires. I passed the car to my sister last year and TPMS is still working fine!!!

I wish I could help but, being utterly bewildered, I haven't a clue. Sorry

I don't know of any replacement requirements for them other than if one fails. There's nothing in the maintenance schedule for it that I've found and I know from experience that you will be notified in the cabin if one fails.

Thanks John Ha. When it's time for tires, I'll be shopping for the best value (but will include do they also have the right balancing equipment). I'll deal with the TPMS when/if a problem occurs.

I sold my W211 sedan , who had factory TPMS 10 yo /180,000 miles still working.
Still when you replace the tires and TPMS are over 6 yo, with $15 price for sensor v/s $25+ for potential reinstallation, I'd get new sensors.

Its been my experience that for a few bucks each, Some tire companies rebuild the sensor... New battery or whatever. I had that done on a 10 year old Dodge ram, Cost under $10 bucks each and they reinitialized all the sensors... Do it with a tire change as often the sensor has to be accessed from inside the tire

Try Costo. Also, if your tires are wearing OK, can tell by the wear on the tires. skip the alignment. Not required for new tires.

One of my HS friends works for Yokohama. He told me that Discount Tire is by far the largest buyer of their tires which leads me to assume they are the largest purchaser of Michelin tires. That said, most independent shops cannot do alignments on Mercedes. I don't know the reason but take that into account.

For my '16 GLE350 I'm looking at the Michelin Defender LTX M/S through a local Tires Plus. They confirmed MB tire balancing methods and TPMS hardware to properly do the job. They matched the TireRack.com price and offer lifetime road hazard and balancing which my dealer might as well. Dealers, however only focus on MO tires skipping other equally load rated tires while charging on average $50/tire more. All-in-all, they priced themselves out of consideration for me.
After putting on a 200 treadwear Dunlop tire just to save money it was an easy decision to shop around.

I got Michelin Pilot A/S's mounted and balanced for $1420. Add another $200+ for alignment and I would have been close to $1700. They were 265/45-20.

Are the Michelin Defender LTX M/S quiet? Di the ride change - I think these are a stiff tire?

I have Michelin Dfend LTX on my 2015 ML I have little over 30.000 miles on the tires now. They are wearing good, still have a lot of tread, but they seem to be rougher and louder. Most people on this site like them. But Im tempted to get replace them for a quieter, smoother riding tire l but hate to drop the bucks when the tires still have a lot of tread. My ML 350 has just over 76,000 miles on it. I would agree with you, I think they are stiff. I remember a post a while back where people are going to a certain Perelli Scorpion tire. for smoother ride. Search the site I think it was on the ML not the GLE site. Let us know what you decide. Good luck

Just placed them on order from putting more miles on them. They are on backorder until mid-January.
From mostly Tire Rack reviews I read, both noise and ride quality rate very good. They don't have as aggressive a tread as many LT tires have so I'd say that contributes to the sound level reported. I'm going for treadwear and handling while towing a camper so that outweighs any possible issues with noise and ride quality.
