IPOD kit question

Does anybody know if the IPOD is controlled through the command system or just steering wheel?

Here is a screen shot of the entry for the iPod Interface Kit that is in the current Canadian Accessories Brochure. It shows that the iPod is controlled through the streering wheel controls and the display is in the instrument cluster.

There are also photos of how iPod Integration works with the UMI kit from mybenzguy blog:

I was under the impression that if you also got the multimedia package, then it would be displayed on the Nav screen.

My understanding is that it is controlled just as a regular cd would be, with the steering wheel, the COMMAND wheel, and voice recog, and show up on the nav screen

Correct. The ipod integration has always been controlled through the multi-function wheel. It's the same with the GLK

I have a question here.
What exactly does the Media Interface do then? I forgot to check that on my options list and I'm wondering if it is something important (required to use iPod)?

Thanks!

I have Media Interface on my SLK. It is opposite from ipod kit in that with it, ipod info is on the center display. You find your songs and everything on center display.

The instrument cluster shows my songs and i can go up or down, but i can't browse through playlists with steering wheel like with the older ipod kits. have to use the center controls for that.

So basically, without the Media Interface, you can browse the songs normally from the steering wheel?

Okay, I think I got it. Thanks!

So I picked up the GLK yeasterday My car has the multimedia package and IPOD kit. In this case you can control and visualize everything on COMMAND/NAV screen as well as the steering wheel. I am not sure if this still holds true if you do not get the multimedia package.
As far as requesting artist or song by voice command, I don't think it's possible. The delivery specialist said it can be done, but I didn't have my ipod songs configured properly

I just took home my 2010 GLK with ipod integration kit and no multimedia package, and it only works thru the steering wheel. IPod options are displayed on the instrument cluster. Absolutely no control through the radio or multi-function wheel. I would expect at least that much. Its kind of embarrassing that a 45K car has this lousy of an option included. if i had known it was this bad, I never would have included it.

the mb-tex is more durable than the leather. plasmapants, when you get the mm pack, you also get the harman kardon ss. it sounds amazing with the ipod hooked up too.

oh no, don't get me wrong, I love the fact its MB-Tex and not leather but it just doesn't sound right. 45k car, fake leather...

if you think ipod sounds amazing with HK, get yourself a DVD-A. Something like Queen or Santana, it will blow your mind....

$3K+ sound quality aside, i am just surprised that a model year 2010 car has this unelegant solution still offered. it feels like it is a solution that was developed about 5 years ago and never improved, oh wait it was. i actually wish i just stuck to the aux input. i actually installed a $99 GROM Audio kit in my old BMW that was much better than this offering.

ya, I spent $150 to retro fit my bmw with ICE ipodkit, works via steering wheel, song list shows up on center console.... how much did you pay for the ipod kit without mm? I think it was a $400 option with MM.

it was in the car already when i chose it, but was a $300 option, if i knew it was this poor of an implementation, i never would have paid for it. i thought it allowed display on the screen and control via the multi-function wheel. mercedes needs to get their act together. seems like a software update should enable this. i won't even get into the lack of understanding of mb service techs when discussing this issue. mbwestminster above states above what his understanding is, but that is only in the case of a $3K multimedia package i guess.

Looks like the $300 ipod/mp3 media interface package is supposed to be accessible via the GLK's central controller and center display.

There is a $375 ipod integration kit is accessible only from the steering wheel button.

Which one did your salesman claim you had on your car?

i knew i didn't have the multimedia package, which i just can't justify $$$, but had no idea that the "ipod integration" was this **** poor. i assumed with an ipod connector in the glove compartment, i had all that i needed. obviously i was dead wrong. problem is, mercedes salesmen and service folks don't really know the difference.

That's true. I did my research way in advance before going into a dealership. Walked out of a dealership near home when the salesman showed his lack of knowledge on the GLK and its features, options and accessories.

I was hoping that was not the trend so I went to another place. Thankfully the dealership I ended up buying the car from was pretty up to date on the product.

Hope you can hook up with someone at MB or the dealership that can remedy your situation.

Spoke to dealer this morning, limited help. Quoted me $1950 plus tax to do the retrofit. that gets me full ipod integration plus other connectors and navi. not gonna happen at that price level. Looking at an aftermarket solution now. Good thing I got a good deal originally on this car. WAKE UP Mercedes!

anyone got feelings on the denison gw500 solution?

that sounds like the universal media interface your dealer is quoting you...

that doesn't include 7" screen right?
