Left/Right Parking Light...why? Also fog lights question

Left/Right Parking Light...why? Also fog lights question
Couple questions here:
1) So on GLK you can turn either right or left parking light on. What's the purpose for having just one light on?
2) Also, is there way to keep fogs on without turning them on every time? It seems that you have to turn main lights on to turn fog lights on, but then you have to turn them off which will also turn fogs off.

1) i never even knew this was possible, so i have no idea why they would do this.
2) as far as i've observed, no. you have to put the headlights to "manual on" position and only then can you pull the dial to turn on the fogs. i can't see how there would be a way to just leave the fogs on without manually turning on the main headlights. in fact, on my car, there's no way of TURNING OFF the headlights the moment i drive the car. it's always on... day or night... rain or shine... always on.... i'm worried that the xenons will eventually turn into this gross, dark purple colour that other xenons become when they've been used for too many years--especially on older mercs like the w220 and the w163 m-class.

1) yea the little light know make is possible to turn left right or both parking lights
2) you can turn headlights off, you have DRL enabled. You can disable it through settings on your trip computer. I don't worry about them burning out, I'll get better ones ones stock ones are gone. They don't cost that much.

Answer to your question:
All Mercedes give you the option of leaving your left or right parking light on. The purpose is that if you park on a dark street, you don't get clipped (sideswiped). It makes your car visible to the street side and uses very little current.

Canadian version cannot turn off the DRL. I would not worry about the HID burning out, as HID's life is pretty long. I think it last about 3000 hours, compared to just 1000 for halogens

I would not worry about that too much. If the HIDs do go purple, it would be just a matter of changing the bulbs. Ballast and igniter should still be good

aah good.... though i have to admit, the audi and bmw drl's are very intriguing, i wish mercedes has a unique drl system that doesn't just use the xenons--aside from the seeming audi-copy leds that we're seeing on their new models. i was hoping that they would come up with something unique like using a hi-tech neon lighting or something.

Correct, its been a feature of German cars as long as I can remember. MY 1970 Porsche 911 had it as well. Less battery drain than leaving all the parking lamps on, and designed to use on the traffic side of the vehicle.
