It's very good, but could use more bass. But you can blast it as loud as your ears can take.
I watched DVD while waiting in airport, damn, I wish I had surround sound like this at home.

the H/K system is good.
Would want to see the sound dampening material used to enhance the bottom bass notes. I am sure that the subwoofer is sitting in a ABS plastic enclosure and would need to reinforce it to like wood to achieve better sound.
I am positive that the speakers overall are of good quality and positioned appropriately as stated in the brochure.
However, a little tweaking / enhancing does fill that bit of the missing gap.

I buy most of my car with upgraded sound system if it’s offered by the manufacture. I have owned 2 cars from different maker (Japanese & German) with BOSE sound system and by far the H/K sound system is the best audio system that I have ever owned. I don’t listen to too much hip hop so existing subwoofer is more than enough for me.
There may be better sound system by BOSE or other maker but so far I am very happy with H/K sound system. Although, I do like to try out the Bang & Olufsen sound system from the Audi.

It would be nice if you could adjust the mid range, there is only bass and treble adjustments.
I find the bass is ok on some frequencies and songs, (very low) but for most music, it is almost like there is no subwoofer.

Harmon Kardon in yrs past was a very good quality amp/head builder, like 30 yrs ago. Today there a decent head unit builder but NOT a speaker builder, never were. The HK in the GLK is fair, better than stock, but a Bose system or aftermarket high end amp/speaker set-up is far superior.

They upgrade the system (speakers/amp/sub) but fail to actually give you upgraded electronics. Its still the same head unit as the stock system and lacks some basic adjustments such as mid range levels, even the old Chrysler units give you the mid option. With Logic 7 it only makes sense to give the user more audio adjustments, but they don't. I have the H/K system in the R however and enjoy it far more than the standard system offered.
Interesting note, they use a Bose system in the Maybach, but not in any other model. And if memory serves me, Bose used to be the upgraded option for MB in the past. Probably like any other manufacture, it all comes down to which company bids the highest for the rights to make the head units for MB and not necessarily what sounds the best.

I had a FX35 with a Bose system that I think was much better than the HK but when you play a DVD the sound is GREAT. Depends on the source. The bass doesn't come close to the Bose. But, I'm not complaining.

How much is the upgrade?
I test drove a GLK with the factory speakers and was impressed enough not to order the HK when it came time to place my order. It's loud, and I've only heard distortion on songs with real low frequencies.
Off topic -> while I was in the market, I was comparing between the Q5 and GLK. Q5 factory sound system is absolute garbage.

HK sounds way better than BOSE (on an infiniti M35). BOSE is way too much bass, muddy and much less details than HK. We had a side by side comparing everything from PinkFloyd: Darkside of the Moon to Beethoven symp. 5....

harmon kardon logos on front door grills, more speaker grills in rear for the 11.1, as well as I think different top of dash for more speakers, not sure on the dash part since I didnt do a side by side comparison but it looked differnt to me. also logic 7 control on screen under sound options, 6 disc dvd changer in dash. so I guess most of it is hidden.
