Economy Button

I usually drive in the default Economy mode. I know that when I push the button and put the car in the "S" mode for "Sport" the transmission will start in 1st gear (rather than 2nd) and will also allow the engine to rev to redline RPM in each gear.

What else, if anything, changes in the "S" mode? Does it mess with valve timing or induction tuning, or...? Should it really be "R" for race?

The last time I put in "R" the car actually goes backward.

For 2010 model it doesn't have "E" mode. It has "C" mode instead.

Sport mode activates the twin turbochargers and the CAT bypass in the exhaust system. The suspension goes into race damper mode and the Brembo carbon fiber brakes are activated.
OR...
You guessed right.1st gear starts and 6k RPM shift points from the transmission are all you get. Possibly quicker downhifts in overtaking mode. Unverified by me.

His 2019 RAM Cummins Turbo Diesel Laramie; Her's 2007 ML320 CDI P3; Mine BMW R1200R
You also get harsher clunking downshifts, which takes my wife's "softer' right foot about a day to cure once she goes back to "E".
