Question regarding winter tires

Hi there,
I went to see what kind of winter tire options out there and one of tires shops suggested me to go with a bit smaller tires for cheaper price tag. I am thinking to get 17" rims and tires and I am supposed to get 235/65R 17 but this shop suggested me go with 215/65R 17.

Is it ok if I go with 215/65R 17 instead of 235/65R 17?

Thanks a lot!

What size are your stock tires?

If they are the 235/45-20 then the 215/65-17 are actually closer to stock diameter then the 235/65-17 tires ( 0.3 inches bigger vs 0.7 inches bigger diameter than stock).

Edit: On a side note, just noticed judging by your screen name you're probably in Canada too. I've got a set of stock 20 inch split 5 spoke wheels for sale if you wanted to keep the stock look in winter. Tires would be more expensive but the wheels would probably be the same or cheaper than buying some new 17 inch.

Thanks for your reply!
Original size is 235/45R20. So you suggest me to go with 215/65-17? Just spoke to Dealer and they don't recommend me to go with narrower tires for SUV. Is that true?

That's a call you'll have to make, personally I went with a 235/55-18 setup for the winter.

I think all tires have some sort of load rating but I'm not sure. You could look up the specs of the tire you want and see if it's rated for a vehicle of the GLK's weight. I doubt a 215 vs 225 of the same model of tire would have a different rating but I'm not sure.

The size recomended and sold by the dealership is 235/60/17.
If you decided to with other sizes, it's your call.

I had a set of wheels and tires for our R Class and decided to try them on the GLK and they work fine. The tires are 235/65/17 and we have no problem running them.

The dealer here would recommend 225/60/17 for Winter set, some people would go 235/60/17 but 215/65/17 I haven't found anyone would go with that one.

I am having a very hard time looking for options, my budget is so tight that I can't afford buying the winter set from a dealer for 300+ a rim ! nor the Kal-Tire option for 1200$ so I went to CL and here what I found

200$ hardly used Goodyear ultra grip performance !
550$ for a 2009 E550 OEM rims and I am going to install them some time next week

the rims are 18 and the tires are 235/50/18,, I know I am having a big different on the odometer, but hey, that's my budget !

Good luck

Better buy yourself some mudflaps.... Those wheels show an offset of 38mm. Glk uses an offset of 45mm+. Your wheels will sit outside the fenders by about 1/2 inch! Your paint might not be happy, let alone permanent dirty sides!
To others: www.tirerack.com gives quite a few choices in winter wheels & tires, 17>20", with all the specs. At least viewing the choices will give you some knowledge....

I asked Kal Tire about that, and it wasn't as bad as you said.
I think I can live with 1/2 inc for 3 month driving around town

GLK winter wheel size "recommended" by MB is 235/60 R17 102. According to the Scandinavian Tire & Rim Organization (STRO) standard, is a +/÷ 5% deviation of the rolling diameter allowed, meaning you could go for 225/65 R17 sized wheels, as we have, for your GLK. Slightly narrower and taller - good for wet roads, slush and deep snow. Maybe less expensive as well?

215/65-17, no.

We are running a 35mm +ET and it is really not a problem. Besides 45 -38 = 7mm which is only 1/4". You will be fine.
