Apple Car Play Options? 2012 GLK350
I'm hoping to get some recommendations on changing the built in screen too something that's Apple Car Play compatible.... It's for a gift - hubby ws looking at some kind of slide out unit at Best Buy but wondering if there's something else that's maybe more built in?

The Sardincar option is the only one. Replacing your head unit will deactivate too many other things in your car and is not worth it. Their add-on kit works really well. I have it in my 2014.

It looks like it replaces the whole screen but retains the original functions. Maybe too good to be true. $518 with Carplay added however.... and likely another $200 to install.

Do any of you guys know if there's enough space to mount a standart double din head unit into the existing screen's place?
My display is not working and I'm trying to find a solution that I could do myself.
Worst case is I'll order a spare display through China and try my luck.
Head unit only shows white lines and only rearview camera works (not fully but 70% of the screen visible when using the camera)

It seems very complex/risky to blindly buy one of the mystery boxes from China and then find someone who knows enough to get it installed and running.
All the specs they spout about these boxes might as well be in Chinese.
Let me ask a different question then - is there any way for him to connect the audio out of an iphone to the audio system in the X204?
The model we have is bare bones - no USB port. Only some odd looking connector thing in the center console.
Adding a bluetooth receive/play function to the radio would be just excellent - that's the only reason he wants CarPlay.

That odd looking thing is what you use to connect your phone or iPod for audio, I recommend a mb plug from a mb dealer , then you can see if it works while your there. I ordered one off eBay and it was so badly counterfeit it was missing pins. For Bluetooth swap out the radio with a newer mb unit from eBay used, it should only be a few hundred. For Apple car play Sardinicar I think is the only option.

Thank you for the replies - I double checked and found there is no connection to anything in the glovebox but the center console has a sole mini jack input. I tested it plugged direct into an iphone 6+, and it works though for some reason I get a popping sound that pops to a regular tempo.... it's 3 pops in a row, silence and repeats...... strange.
I just coincidentally happen to have which should theoretically work with the iPhone but I haven't been able to pair it yet - still trying.

i would say check with christheswede (CKM motors) he replaced a ML navigation with a mounted navigation (not sure on the carplay) but maybe he can guide you, since then navigation in the ML is the same as the GLK (integrated)

Depends on the unit, as the space behind the screen is pretty shallow. The Sardincar solution works well.

Bluetooth audio doesn't sound as good as using the Mercedes MM connector to iPod 30-pin or Lightning. Just get the cable.

Bluetooth from a high rate bit source like Apple sounds just about as good as cd or line level. And I upgraded to Audison and have an Optical path , Pandora yes, that sounds worse.

Just about every car system goes through your audio 20, forget the idea of swapping in a different brand. Your radio also has a hidden eq, it’s in the Maintenance Progam. It helps a bit to boost bass, cut mids, boost treble, but different speakers help a lot more.

Still looking - unfortunately the Sardincar doesn't seem to actually be sold anywhere. I can't even find a price - I've tried to contact them several times and zero response. Seems kind of shady and there's no place selling these online that I could find.
