Is it smart to buy the ELW service plan?

I just bought a 2020 GLS 450 today and the F&I guy talked me into the 30k mile extended service package for $2,960. Is that a good deal and/or should I even buy it?

Thanks in advance!

im sure other members will chime is regarding the price ,one thing i do know is that you can buy ELW from any dealer at any time as long as you do it before your original warranty expires.Enough time to shop around

That is really useful info, thanks for the quick reply. Does that apply to the prepaid service plan as well as the warranty?

You might try calling Finance person at Tafel motors. There are other posts on the x166 forum about their prices. But it seems like a lot of $ for 30k miles. I thought i paid 3k something for coverage thru 125k miles back in 2013. Best money I spent. I’m at about 120k now, put in a lot of miles during my daughter’s college bball career.

It also obviously depends on your buying trends.
At the minimum, make sure you get it back if you sell the car (and have the option to transfer).

Yes you can buy prepaid service plan at any time.I recommend buying prepaid service after second or third service that way you get more for your money as first couple services are pretty cheap just oil change and brake flush it gets more expensive when you need brake change and transmission service.Hope that helps

I spoke to Jeff at Tafel and he said the MSRP on the service plans are:
20k - $1490
30k - $2060
40k - $2850

I got the dealer I purchased from down to $2125 but decided to take your advice and wait until after the second or third service. Thanks for the help!

Oops, sorry, I answered for the extended warranty but you asked about service plan. I figure you are paying the same unless you get a discount so I didn’t do the service.

So the Extended Warranty beyond the 4/50 is how much? I'm interested in 7 or 8 years and 100k miles. Can prepaid service go out as far as 7 or 8 years , too?

I purchased both the 40k service plan and 6yr/100k extended warranty (ELW) from Jeff when we bought our GLE 450 in June - paid $1,545 for the 40k service plan (list price @ that time) and $2,200 for the 6yr/100k ELW which was discounted about 30% from list price.

I see that the list price for the 40k service plan is now up to $2,250 for the GLE (+$705 from when we purchased) vs $2,850 for the GLS.

Here's the discussion of ELW from the GLE 167 forum for reference:

I just got my GLS 450 yesterday and I purchased the 30K prepaid service. They tried to charge me $2,960, which is supposed to be the price as of 1/1/20, but the MB website still says $2,060, so they honored that price. The lower price is in the area of the website in the "build" mode at "Service and Care" options. If you paid the higher price, you might want to ask your dealer for a refund. you're liking your new GLS.

I paid $3210 for 4 yr 40000 service plan for GLS450. At the time the website stated $2250. When I queried the difference this is the response I got from MB:
Firstly, I would like to apologize in advance for the way that the Mercedes-Benz website is set up. Configuring a vehicle on the website is not reflective of real life options and pricings. The website will allow you to select any items and packages (often some of them cancelling each other out!) as it is not smart enough to differentiate. The same is true for the pricing on the prepaid maintenance. There is an amount there, but if you notice it doesn’t give you the ability to purchase it from the website because there is an inherent understanding that the information is likely not reflective of real-world pricing (this is why for all parts of the configuration, you must be routed to a dealer for final purchase options).
I accepted that but now thinking I should have negotiated further.

That's a truly bogus reason that your dealer provided. The pricing of these items are set out on the website so that when you "build" the car you want, it gets included in the overall build list, for which you get a quote from dealers for your overall car purchase. The prepaid service arrangements are considered part of the cost of the car, not as accessories might be differently categorized. Why would MB put prices on their website if they wanted to leave this entirely up to the dealers? If you lease or finance the car, these stated costs would likely be included in the calculation of lease or financing charges. Until MB adjusts the costs stated on its website, the dealer should honor these costs.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I guess it is out of the question to cancel and take out cheaper option elsewhere?
They must have seen me coming as I also paid $2,955 for the tire and wheel cover.

It will be good to know you're covered for these things; you'll enjoy your vehicle more as a result.
