Winter Tire options for GLS 23” wheels

My purchase of a GLS580 is hinging on me figuring out what to do with the lack of all-season / winter tires for the 23” wheels. I live in the suburbs of NYC and don’t feel comfortable in using max performance summer tires when family hauling in freezing temperatures. My problem is that I really really like the style of the 23” wheels but no tire manufactures make an all-season tire for the 23” rims. So until they do, I am thinking of buying the below wheels that are optional on the 2020 GLE (v167) as a winter set because they are the same style as the GLS 23” rims but are only 22”. There are way more options for winter and all season tires for 22” rims. For example, I can get Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 (285x45R22), which have a radial circumference of 100.84” which is close enough to the stock 23” wheel circumference of 100.46”.

My question for this forum is whether I can mount the below GLE 22” wheels (starred) on a GLS 580 (x167 / MY2021). To further complicate it, these stock GLE rims are staggered and I can only find winter/all-seasons for the front rim size since the rears are to wide. So I want to buy two pairs of front GLE rims and use them as my winter rims on my GLS. The circumference is not an issue but I’m not sure about the (1) wheel offsets or (2) lug pattern / size, and (3) caliper clearance and whether it will work on the GLS580.

WHEELS:
  • GLS 23" AMG Twin 5-Spoke Wheels w/ Black AccentsR01, 690

    • 325/35 R 22 on 11J22 ET50 (Circumference97.25)

I can’t help with your particular questions, but I can certainly commiserate that the tire selection at the high performance end for 23 inches is extremely limited and is one of the two reasons I would not purchase 23 inch wheels at this point. The other reason being the harsh ride that a number of reviewers have noted. When Michelin offer both the PS4 SUV and the Alpin in MB’s staggered sizes, I would consider it.

There a several Pirelli Scorpion winter in correct 21 inch sizes with MO designation for the staggered 21 inch factory wheels. Here is a link to the the MBUSA site where you can buy them. Don't use the GLE rims they have the wrong offset. Buy the GLS 21 inch staggered set with the correct offset and put on these tires, it is the simple solution.

Yeah, I run Scorpion Winter in 285/40-22 year round and love them.

Awaiting a 2021 GLS580
*UPDATE
I discovered that Pirelli makes the scorpion winter tires in sizes that will fit the staggered GLE 22” rims yet still be large enough to work with the GLS (i.e.,285/45R22 & 325/40xR22). So if I want to have a set of 22” winter wheels that are the same style as the stock 23” wheels then I just need to confirm that the above 22” wheels from GLE580 can fit on the GLS580 which seems likely even if the offset is different.

Awaiting a 2021 GLS580
[***UPDATE - it seems very likely that the rims in the below “VIPCAR” picture are counterfeit/fake rims and are not the authentic 22” rims from the GLE580.]

I randomly stumbled on this GLS580 that seems to have the 22” version of the GLS580 23” OEM wheels. I’m guessing these are the stock wheels of the GLE580 that the dealership or purchaser had installed on this GLS. I’m guessing this was done to accommodate cold weather tires.

At first glance I assumed these 22” wheels are the optional stock ones from a GLE580. But I’m pretty sure the 22” rims from GLE580 have much thicker black rim sidewalls and aren’t nearly as low profile as the equivalent portion on the 23” rims of the GLS580 even though they are the same style.

BUMP, anyone figure out a solution to the lack of all-season / winter tires for the GLS 23” wheels. I’m literally holding off on getting my GLS 580 until I figure out a solution. Being that I really really like the style of the 23” wheels and want to stick with it, it looks like the three options are: (1) purchase an extra set of front GLS 23” wheels and put them on the back since they have all-season tire options for that width. (2) purchase a set of the staggered GLE 580 22” wheels that look very similar the GLS580 23” wheels and put on winter tires to use this as my winter tires each season. (3) go with 22” replica rims which i am pretty opposed to for quality, safety, and counterfeit reasons.

BUMP, anyone figure out a solution to the lack of all-season / winter tires for the GLS 23” wheels. I had to pass on my custom ordered 2021 GLS 580 because I really like the style of the 23” wheels but couldn’t figure out a winter solution. I desperately need help from this forum to confirm that either of the below would work:

1) purchase an extra set of front GLS 23” wheels and put them on the back since they have all-season tire options for that width.

2) purchase a set of the staggered GL
E 580 22” wheels that look very similar the GLS580 23” wheels and put on winter tires and use them as my winter tires each season.

PS: I updated the original thread to add cross references to other threads on this forum that relate to winter tires for the GLS (some relate to the 23” wheels).

I have the 23" and I bought a set of 20" OEM take offs (like new) that have Perelli Scorpion all seasons to get me through a few ski trips in the winter. I live in SoCal so don't need winter tires other than going to the mountains. The 20" are much narrower so it tucks a bunch especially in the rear but it doesn't look as bad as I feared. It looks like what it is. A square winter setup. Performs pretty well in the snow.

20" all seasons

23"

If you are in a market that really needs Winter tires then All Seasons won't do you much good. You need to get dedicated Winters. There are options out there for a wheel/tire set. I suggest you look at aftermarket wheels or go with a set of the 21" OE wheels. I just got a 2022 GLS450 with the AMG pkg and the 22" with Summer tires. I live in an area that requires Winter tires so I just picked up a set of Mandrus Estate 21" wheels ( 21x10 ET46 front / 21x10.5 ET35 back) and slapped on a set of Vredestein WintracPros in the standard 21" OE tire size. We just had a foot of snow, change to hardpack, then ice then slush and the thing didn't skip a beat!

No need to spend the money on OE wheels for Winter, the salt/sand/cinder/etc will take its toll on them so just go for a solid quality aftermarket wheel with the best Winter tire you can get. The setup above fits perfectly, kept the proper stance look of a staggered set and no problems with the speedo since it is the same OE tire sizes.

You can go for a 22" setup as well but the only rear tire offered for Winter is the Pirelli Scorpion and I personally am simply not a fan of that tire as it does not do as well as other tires on the market.

22in winters

I’m not sure if I can advertise on this thread, but I have a set of 22in winter wheels/tires (non-Mercedes) which I purchased for the same reason as this thread.
I’m trading in my GLS so happy to sell if interested. They have only been used for one winter season in Canada
