New GLS580 Owner Looking for Advice on Snow Tires

Hello Everyone,

I’m new to this forum and have recently purchased a 2020 GLS580 with 23 inch wheels. As most people here on this forum already know, the 23 inch wheels are only available with summer performance tires. The wheels don’t accept any all season or snow tires given their very specific size.

For the winter I am planning to buy a set of OEM 22 inch wheels that are staggered fitments with 10 inch in the front, and 11 inch in the rear. These are the same OEM 22 inch wheels that are optional on both the GLS580 and 450.

Can someone recommend specific dedicated winter tires for the 22 inch wheels? I believe the tire size is 275/45-22 and 325/40-22....not 100% sure.

Awaiting a 2021 GLS580
I am having the same problem with lack of winter tires for the 23” GLS wheels. I am cross citing my post from a couple of months ago
https://mbworld.org/forums/gls-class...23-wheels.html

Below is the information for the GLS 22” wheels you are referring to. The fronts are only 9.5 width(not 10) and 285 fronts are recommended (as opposed to 275) to keep the tire circumference more similar.

22” AMG Multi-Spoke Wheels
285/45 R 22 on 9.5 J x 22 ET 45 (Front)
325/40 R 22 on 11.5 J x 22 ET 47 (Rear)

I’ve been thinking it also may be worth considering getting the same width rims for both the front and back. This is a more common configuration for winter tires and provides some safety and performance advantages when traveling in snowy/rainy conditions. My bet is that you can just buy two sets of the front rims (22” or 23”) and then you would have more options for winter tires, since the width of the rears is why it’s so challenging to find winter tires.

As for your original question regarding winter tires for the offset 22” GLS Wheels, here are the options I discovered as of a couple of months ago.

Those four are all good winter tires. FWIW, they’re no longer called snow tires.

and if you are getting a set of winter tires on dedicated wheels,
the specs for 22" are

5-122 bolt pattern
fronts are 9.5" with 45mm offset
rears are 11.5" with 47mm offset

I hope to have your problem soon, but when I bought my ‘14 GL550 - I ended up getting a tire and wheel package from our dealer. The benefit is that the tires will be within their specs. The disadvantage is that the tires will only be the ones that they determine are in their specs.
I think they have an annual sale.
That said, I just went to the mbusatirecenter.com site and it only lists summer tires for the 22’s. But it still might be worthwhile to talk to your parts department.

Keep in mind that MO tire designations that MB use are not required. You can use any tire that fits and meets the XL load and speed/service specs.

Many people go down one size for snow tires rims, in your case 22 inch. Also they have a new tire out now call a Three Peak Mountain SNOWFLAKE tires. It is not a snow tire or the normal all season tire as we know it.

All season tires cannot be used when chains or snow tires are required but these can and they can be used in the summer.

Most tire companies have this new type tire now.

The Alpine symbol has been standardized by the US Department of Transportation since 2007. So these “snowflake on mountain” symbols are at least 13 years old. They are commonly called winter tires, and incorrectly called snow tires.
