48V Error Message on 2022 GLS450
Hi, just took delivery of a new 2022 GLS 450. Driving home on the day I took delivery, I lost power and got the following messages: Red battery picture, See Operators Manual and also Yellow battery picture, 48V Battery, See Operator’s Manual. To regain power, I had to pull over, turn off the ignition and restart the car. I searched for this issue and it seems most posts regarding the 48V battery had to do with the car not starting and not losing power while driving. Has anyone else experienced the loss of power while driving on a 2022?
Thank you!

Sorry to hear of your experience.
This an endemic problem with MB’s 48V hybrid system. After nearly 4 model years with this system, they still have not sorted it out.
Warranty is the only solution. Dump the car after your lease or warranty are up.

Thanks….do you know what they “do” to “fix” the problem when it’s back at the dealer? Some of the other posts talk about defective batteries, but that issue seems to have been resolved and so new cars should have “good” batteries.

I would read all of the posts. There are alot of them. Battery replacement and software update seem to be the two main remedies.

How is the experience with software updates? One would think if updates are available that 1) it will be installed in newly manufactured cars off the production line and 2) it will be downloaded and installed in affected vehicles automatically? I see a Software Update section in the Mercedes Me app. Is it actually functional?

A newly manufactured car does not necessarily mean it has the latest SW.. many of the ECU in the vehicle could have been manufactured long before the assembly time.

It happened after 1 year of having the car and approx 8000 miles... I don't think it has anything to do with mileage or time. It is sorts of random. Some people ran into that issue in less than a week after delivery.

Not every update can be OTA. There is also another SW update to fix the wireless charging for iPhone 12/13 which is not OTA as well.

MBWorld Fanatic!
I posted this on the GLE forum, but I’ll repost it here. https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...errerid=436956.
I’ve been reading up on this with mild apprehension. I found a reported TSB on NHTSA’s website for this model. Not sure if this is a repost, but it goes into detail what is causing these issues and how to fix them. The TSB can be found here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...06063-0001.pdf.
Apparently there are multiple issues that seem to mirror one another in regards to the end result. I copied the five listed causes from the TSB below. Simply put, it seems to be a mixture of software and hardware, so it’s not surprising some people are experiencing the “same issue” multiple times. It’s like whack-a-mole.
Cause
Cause 1: Software causes Intermittent No Starts with fault B183387 in DC/DC converter N83/1
Cause 2: Software causes Permanent No Start with fault B183349 and B183371 in 48V battery G1/3
Cause 3: Hardware short circuit in 48V system causes fault B183319 in 48V battery. May also have fault B183371.
Cause 4: Internal 48V battery Peltier cooling element failure causes fault B183397
Cause 5: This will Always have fault code B183371 but different from cause 2 and 3 -- it will Not have B183349, B183319, or any other faults in the 48V battery. This will only have fault B183371 in 48V battery. Cause 5 is from the 48V battery detecting an abnormality which then causes the 48V battery to disconnect itself. The disconnected 48V battery then causes subsequent symptoms: Limp Home Mode, overheating, A/C not blowing cold, or loss of accelera- tion
You can find a list of all recalls and active (or at least reported) service campaigns here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2022/M...Communications.

Not yet. Spoke to Service Manager and he says 48V issues needs to be coordinated with Mercedes and they are waiting to hear back. As an aside, does anyone know if it’s standard procedure when a car is in for service that the dealer updates all available software for that car? My understanding (from this forum) is that not all updates can be done OTA and some needs to be done by a dealer. How does one go about asking for all available updates? I asked the service manager this and it didn’t sound like it’s something they do. Why would they wait until a customer experiences a problem first before updating if there is a known issue?

Hi, just to update the group…got a call from the service manager and they were able to trace the issue to a loose ground wire. It sounds like whenever there is a 48V issue, the dealer needs to follow the steps dictated by Mercedes to diagnose the problem. In my case, it was making sure all the wiring is correct and so from tracing that, they found the loose connection. Hopefully, that resolved the issue.

update: I got the car back and when I review the paperwork to see what was done, it says they checked all the connections, removed seats to get at the 48V battery and then reversed the process to put everything back together, but nothing in the document says they found a loose ground wire as the service manager told me. Should I be concerned nothing was actually fixed?
Thanks
Thanks

Last week I had local dealer do the 48v recall on our 2022 GLS450 and this week 48v battery error light came in. Vehicle started stuttering, AC started turning off and finally vehicle just stalled in the road. Coasted off road and let it sit for 15 mins and then restarted it and made it to dealership. They gotta pull the passenger seat to get to the battery and check it out. Could be bad battery, problem from when the recall was done, loose wire, software update or any number of other items. So will sit here and wait.

2022 GLS
Have about 28K on my 2022 GLS 450. I ran into a store for 10 minutes and came back and it would not start and got a yellow 48v warning message. They were gathering data to send to the Mercedes engineers. Latest info i got was they need to check the intergrated starter bolts in the bell housing. The next steps would be a battery change. A little worried that a lose bolt in the transmission bell housing is their answer to a 48v error.
