hello all...anybody bump up there tire size on the 17inch stock ml 430 rims??? either this or a rim tire package???

I have heard road holding can become very poor if you fit wider tyres than recommended for the particular rims because the side walls flex too much round corners.

I you would like wider tyres you will need wider rims.

I also want to go up a size or two when I get my next set of Michelin CrossTerrrains. Stock is 275/55/17 and I plan to go up to 275/60 or 65/17. From what I have seen online with others that have gone up, these diameter sizes should both work without any rubbing, and will fill the wheelwells a little better. The only other thing that might be needed is maybe a torsion bar tweak to raise the front end a little.

It looks like Rinspeed75 "plus-sized" meaning the wheel size is increased, but with the right size tire, the overall diameter of the tire/wheel combo remains the same.

What I plan to do, and what I think Imwalkin is talking about, is increasing the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combo. The speedo & odo will of course be affected, but by a small percentage.

This kind of change will really be for looks (filling the wheelwell), increased tire sidewall height (save rim curb-rash), and slightly more ground clearance.

The numbers:
stock 275/55/17
sidewall = 6.0 inches
diameter = 28.9 inches

275/60/17
sidewall = 6.5 inches
diameter = 30.0 inches
speedo error = 3.7% too slow

275/65/17
sidewall = 7.0 inches
diameter = 31.1 inches
speedo error = 7.5% too slow

I have read on this forum or another that 31"s have worked fine without any type of lift to a stock ML.

The 3.7% is probably pretty close to speedo error, so it will most likely be more accurate. Of course, the odo will now be off so you are going farther than indicated, meaning your mpg will be slightly lower than actual. 7.5% error might be a little too high.

I can't believe the somewhat retarded responses to this simple Q. YES, YES and YES, a whole bunch of us have upgraded, some even up to 22inch rims. Just do a search. If you select the rim size and offset correctly and match the right tire, you will not have any issues. As a matter of fact, go to TireRack's web site and match the rims to your car any way you wish. I updated my OEM 17 to 19's with no issues at all.

Hey Darkman, the first part of Imwalkin's question is asking about bumping up the TIRE size on the STOCK 17" WHEELS.
