Hey guys, want to have my brakes done...

Would anyone who lives around the Bay area, especially south bay know a good mechanic to go to, to have mine done?

Also, should I get O.E.M. Brake Pads from performanceproducts.com and bring them with me to have them put on. Cheaper that way no?

just did mine

I just replaced my pads...did it myself
I used porterfields all around...they come with a kit for preventing squeaks...
For the fronts, I didnt do anything with rotors except spray the anti-squeal spray on them (it originally required the rotors to be sanded down a bit..but I skipped that step)

For the rear, I just changed the pads alone.
Easy to do too (20 mins per side)...4 screws and pop out the pad...push piston back with c-clamp...pop in new pads...screw it up and done.

If you go to a shop...any brake shop will work with a reputable name.

StNick, loved your "Visa" interpritation.

As far as pads costs:

From formymercedes.com web:

Porterfield R4S Pads available for Mercedes ML500 series

Vehicle Front Pads Rear Pads
Mercedes Price: $179 Price: $79
2000-2002
ML500

Or about $260 + shipping. OEM at your local delear is the same ($129 front + $129 rear) + tax.

Germanstar.net prices, if pads they're selling are the same as delear's, are only $147 ($75 front and $72 rear - very cheap as compared to a delear).

And BTW, even MB's dealers prices very by as much as $100:

Sovereign in Brooklyn, NY wants $500 for ML500 brakes, but MB Manhattan - "only" $400 and the last number includes tax.

Rgrds...

Is it necessary to do the back brakes as well?

Not sure if I should buy and have the back brakes done. I did take a look at the back and they seem to have more pads then the front.

Thanks guys

If you're asking that type of question...take your truck into a dealer. For your safety.

Funny how we forget safety in an effort to save $100.

You're right, should I also replace the rotors too?

The front and back rotors looks fine. But people are suggesting to replace the rotors when replacing the pads.

BTW, which ones are better pads? Porterfields or OEMs? any feedback from pads from germanstar or porterfield.

I'm sure the rotors might "look fine" but you don't judge a rotor's condition by just looking at it.

The wear spec is stamped on the rotor. Ask the folks who are recommending the rotor change what the minimum spec is, and how much your rotors have worn.

The OEM pads work just fine unless you're obssessed with brake dust.

Unhappy Wiston, is this guy good and reasonable price?

I'm comparing two shops now and seeing if any one around here is any good with more competitive prices.

thanks
