2001 ML320 No Crank

I am having a problem with my 2001 ML320. The car died when I placed it in park. I noticed a start error message when it died. It will now not crank over. After reading many post here, I have checked the following:
power is correct on k12 relay and k8. The car will crank when I jump out the k8 relay.
I disconnected the battery for 24 hours, cleaned all grounding points.
Dash lights work correctly in key position 1 and position 2. Red light on radio flashes when key is installed and also when position 1 is selected only slower. I do not always get a single flash when I select position 2.
I have two spare keys and they did not work. The remotes have never controlled the door locks but my understanding is that the part in the key for security does not require power.
I have replaced the ignition switch.
I am now thinking it is the Key Transponder Immobilizer but would like to ask advice before I spend over $100 on a used one as a guess. Is there anyway to bypass or test it? My understanding is that this is the only security part that can be changed out without having to match it to a specific car VIN. Start Error message that came on when it died has never came back on during all my testing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this Is a great little car, I hope to keep it going. Thank You.

With the key out of the ignition, does the LED light blink continuously?

When you insert the key and turn it to pos. #2, does it blink once?

Thank you for responding, It does not blink with the key out of the ignition. It will blink continuously with the key inserted and in position 1. Position 2 will flash once, but not every time. It may just be a leftover flash from the number 1 position. I does not usually flash if I go straight to the number 2 position.

It must light blink continuously with the key out.

Are you looking at the LED while you turn it to pos. #2?

Yes, there was a couple of posts that mentioned the light in position 2 so I have been focused on that for a couple of days. If I go straight to position 2 I can get a single flash. No flash when the key is removed. I have checked every fuse. I think the problem is in the security system but have read it can get costly. Does changing the key transponder sound like a good idea to you? I have not tried jumping the starter with the key on to see if it starts, Would that tell me if the security system is the problem. Thanks again for your input. I have tried a couple of places and you are the only help I have received this far.

It's time to scan for codes.

Those are not code numbers. You need a scanner.

95% of the time it is the Immobilizer and the rest is EAM or DAS module.
