F/R brake job for $850.00, good deal?
I have done some research and seem to me OEM on ML500 is as good an any aftermarket replacement. So, I call around and gotten a quote from a local service shop for all OEM parts installed at $850.00 Is it a good deal?
FYI....The local MB Service center (non-dealer) quoted me $400 for pads ($200 parts, $200 labor). I am still thinking this is something I will do myself.

Yes, I am refering to Genuine MB parts. OEM = Original Equipment by Manufacturer. I think that's the term.
FYI...there is not a "by" in OEM. I think you are confusing MB as the manufacturer as opposed to the actual manufacturer of the product.

I'm all confused now. Sound like they are the same part just packaging in different ways. I know the place I got quote from usually go thru actual dealership with special mechanic/local discount for Genuine part when customer ask for original parts otherwise he'll get aftermarket.

OEM=same part but directly from the manufacturer (or purchased form a vendor) wihtout the MB stuff (stamp, part number, packaging, etc.)
Aftermarket=product that is not MB stamped or OEM but still adheres to the specifications of the OEM stuff so that it it "comparable" and can be used.
For example, I can buy brake pads for my Porsche from the dealer for about $200 (Genuine part) or from Textar (same pad but labeled as Textar which is OEM) or I can buy a Pagid pad that is aftermarket. All 3 work fine but the price is vastly different between them.
Hope this makes more sense.

Now I understand completely. My parts quoted are Genuine MB parts. I may try OEM for cost saving now, haha. I try to get another quote.
, get a better jack than the OEM one, bottle jack at pepboys 19.99, remove wheel, 14mm socket remove the screw in back, slide out pads, slide in new one and replace. For $850, i will fly out to where u are and do them for you
. All i am saying is that the MB is just like any other car when it comes to brakes, it is a very simple process that the dealers/mechanic completely rip off consumers for, email me if you need step by step instructions, or to give your address so that i can book a flight.
