How do I reset a Service A maintenance light on a 2010?

My local thief of a dealer is refusing to clear the light with just an oil change. They want to charge extra money to CHECK items that they should be checking anyway.

In any case, does anyone have info on how to reset the Service A light on the newer 2010 system?

Thanks

Can't blame him for refusing as you did not have the service done, only a small part of it. Why do you expect them to check all that stuff which includes a interagation of the computer for free. Don't know what you do for a living but how would you react if you were asked to work for nothing?

only a small part?? $160 for a f---ing oil change is not enough to "check" the other items??? what planet do you live on where money grows on the tree in the front yard?

the ONLY two action items are to change the oil and reset the light.

and if I nickle-and-dimed my boss about the items that I "check" at work, i would be fired in a heartbeat!

Interior
· Function check
· Check warning and indicator lamps, illumination and interior lighting
· Check windshield wiper, windshield washer system, headlamp cleaning system
· Reset maintenance service counter in instrument cluster

Wheels, brakes
· Check front brake pads for lining thickness
· Check tires for damage, condition
· Correct tire inflation pressure

Engine compartment
· Change engine oil and filter
· Fluid level checks of the following:
· Engine cooling system, antifreeze and corrosion protection
· Windshield washer system
· Brake system
· Check and correct battery fluid level
· Check battery condition
· Check catch, safety catch and hinges on engine hood for proper operation

Trunk
· Correct tire inflation pressure in spare tire
· Check battery condition

To do the other items Properly there is well over an hours work. Yes checking is important and I think when items start to fail on your vehicle due to lack of attention you will cry the loudest of anyone here. There is a reason these items are call preventative maintenence. As I said I don't know what you do for a living and I don't care but I do not think you would work for nothing. As for nickle and diming, you are most likely paid on a salary basis and you are paid for checking what ever you check. As for $160 for an oil change I feel thats fair. My suggestion to you is to use Jiffy Lube and let the $5 per hour monkeys maintain your vehicle.

I should have mentioned that the Service A total cost is $400. So do explain how the extra time adds up to $240. That is one hell of an hourly rate! And also, if it takes the experienced mechanic an hour to check the tires, fluids, and lights, he too should be fired because it took him double the time it should have.

In any case, if you are fine with those kinds of rates, by all means go to the local dealer. But I refuse to be blatantly bent over and ripped off for the money that I had to actually work to earn.

I had my first service A done a couple of weeks ago. It cost me 300 bucks (plus another 100 for a detail I requested) This included my state inspection and emmissions test, tire rotation (front to back), oil change, all the service A items, pick up and delivery from and to my office, a loaner new C Class, of course oil and filter. I think that is very fair pricing! Of course sales tax was added to the total. All other fluid top offs were included along with new wiper blades.

Almost but not quite. You are correct that I do very little if anything by myself. I learned a long time ago after 40 years in the aircraft business the value of preventative maint by trained techs. In the long run it adds to reliability and in fact is usually less expwnsive than the half assed way of doing things or not doing them at all. My MB's typically visit the shop once a year for routine maint, preventative maint, inspection and emmissions testing. This fits very well with the mileage I put on my MB's. I do not think that spending $300 to $600 a year is excessive on an annual or on a cost per mile basis. Had I elected to do some work myself or at a cheap independent shop the savings do not warrant the potential grief.

Service A

is just a glorified oil change all the other items are simple check belt check air check fluids. You can perform those and oil changes yourself fill in the booklet and remain under warranty.
Try the standard mb with steering wheel menu.
X Switch on the ignition.
X Press button menu or menu on the
multifunction steering wheel repeatedly
until the standard display (Y page 122)
appears in the multifunction display.
X Press button UP or DOWN on the
multifunction steering wheel until the
maintenance service indicator display with
the service symbolWrench ¯ and the
maintenance service deadline appears in
the multifunction display.
At that point most systems ask if you want to reset the fss You press and hold the R button until it beeps.

If you do your own maint the dealer is required to provide you with the reset procedure by law. They are jacking you around.

I love and respect those "monkeys". They are regular, hard working and unfortunate Americans.

Vpr80 I’m with you on this on. Every time I go in for scheduled service it costs me 800 plus. My dealer attempted to charge me 135.00 for washing the driver’s side of the motor. The funny thing about this is you could eat off that motor, I keep it so clean. Well I refused and after speaking with the service manager the dollar field was replaced with a N/C trying to make me feel like they were doing me a favour.

I have since decided that there are other qualified Mercedes techs that can do the work as good or better for a reasonable amount of dollars.
