Lightbulb Oil Requirement for 07-08 CDI engines

Hi, I wanted to ask what other members are now doing with their diesel pre-adblue,07-08, engine oil changes. The oil I use to get in the manual is discontinued and has been replaced or superseded. Are owners still using the ESP Formula M from Mobil one or any generic 5w-40. Does the engine oil play a large role in protecting the exhaust system? Let us know what you or your non MB mechanic uses.

When Mobil 1 ESP 5W-40 was phased out I switched to Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. It meets spec 229.51 and 229.52.

If you have a diesel CDI you must run the low ash ESP type of oil to avoid problems with your emission control system.

I'm currently using Amsoil Euro Formula 5w40. According to my oil analysis, it's performing well.

I finally used Pento High Performance II 5W-40. Is there any specific weight we should use for different temperatures or is it owner's preference at that point? Going from 5w-40 to 0W-30 does not sit right with me for some reason.

The important thing is that you find an oil that meets the spec for your vehicle, which I'M ASSUMING is 229.51 (check your manual before believing me on that).

I've always used either the Mobil 1, or the OEM lubricant. FWIW, Mobil 1 ESP is available on Amazon.

0W30 will give you easier starts in the Arctic and will generally give you better fuel economy than the 5W40. As stated by BA796, it still needs to meet the 229.51 or the 229.52 spec. None of this however, is an indication of how long the oil is good for.

In my opinion (based on data and experience) and under normal driving conditions (no towing), the MB branded 229.52 oil is good for about 20,000kms (12,500 miles), M1 0W30 ESP is good for 12,000kms (7,500 miles), and Amsoil Euro 5W40 is good for 20,000kms (12,500 miles). These are the only ones I've tested so far. Next up is the Amsoil Euro 5W30, but I think that might be my last one, as I've spent way too much money on oil analysis. I might consider another one if some one felt very strongly about it.

I've opted to have my Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 changed every 5,000 miles. This was based on the recommendation of my indy mechanic, a former Mercedes Master Tech, as the emissions are dumped back into the oil, and in my case, contributed to the intake manifolds needing to be replaced. They were really gunked up.
