EXHAUST FUMES INTO CABIN ML320 CDI
Hi all! My ML320 CDI 2008, started releasing some exhaust fumes into the cabin when connecting the air. If I'm driving fast there is no problem, but if I'm driving in city all fumes are coming in and obviously is not good... What I did: Before the smell appeared I tied strong the turbo intake and engine breather seal (the orange seals) making sure they don't leak, as they used to leak a lot, so maybe that's a big clue???. I changed the Oil separator breather Crankcase (valve) for a new Vaico. I cleaned the EGR hose which was pretty blocked (not totally), I removed the EGR valve and cleaned (it wasn't too bad). I doubled checked the intercooler turbo pipe seal hose and it was ok and doesn't leak there (the green ring seal). I changed air filters. I changed glow plugs, all of them but not the number 5 (middle right side) as it's stuck there... I can actually see the fumes appearing from the EGR valve or surrounds, but I don't know what else to do... Note, it's an Australian car, so the intake cabin air is in the right side, just next to the EGR valve...
The car starts very well, doesn't release any black/white smoke from the rear exhaust (and actually that's another kind of smell), it has good power and it doesn't have any engine lights in dashboard, it drives very well. The car has high mileage (270K) but as I said drives very well, just that smell is very annoying as I cannot use the air almost at all. I've been reading can be the DPF or maybe the EGR valve doesn't work properly even not showing warn light? I have the Xentry Star but I don't know very well how to check that (maybe if someone know how I could find the issue).
Well, any help would be much appreciate it.

No I didn’t...Gasket was ok so I didn’t think on replace (and no idea about bolts!). Do you think that’s why it leaks exhaust fumes? The mechanic (just looking at the engine) told me it’s not the valve as I have no warn light, but I read in other threads that sometimes they don’t work properly without warning in the dashboard.

There is no code for leaking exhaust gas and I cannot help you find that leak.
The PDF says to replace the gasket and the two bolts.
As a matter of fact, whenever you replace a component that has a gasket, you must replace it.

A number of years ago my CDI was at dealer for something, perhaps the o-rings and when I got it back it had cabin exhaust fumes. Service advisor recognized this immediately and had it rectified. I think it had to do with egr. I’d check that gasket again.
