gas mileage?

2012 ml350 Gas. Sticker quotes 18-23
Picked mine up with 9k miles and trip counter never reset.
Said avg mpg was 18.9. I was happy with that.

I'm lucky to get 16.0 in town conservative driving.
Am I missing something?
My e350 said 17/23 I got 18.5 in town routinely and I DROVE it. It was fun to gun it and I often did. Gradma driving gets me 15.5

Ideas?

Drive like ur kids?
Not broke in yet.
May need to paddle up to higher gear in town. Apparently they're great on highway when 6 & 7 overdrive kicks in

Hard to believe not broken in yet.
Drive at/below speed limit in town.
Shouldn't have to paddle shift to get minimum mpg.

Thanks though

Below is the problem engine works to hard or stays in lower gear over reving so to speak. True Breakin will be about 40-50000mi. With synthetic oil it has to be. Hope it gets better.

16 in the city is about what to expect unless you granny it. That's what I get, but every time my wife drives it's higher for some reason! Compared to 18.5 in the much lighter E, with no AWD and more aero seems about right.

I was a little surprised by the sticker honestly. So I agree it's what I expected but it is first car in the last 10 years that hasn't at least met the lower mpg number. Usually much better than stated. So I was a little surprised when it came in a full 2 mpg below sticker especially since it is supposed to be the "blue efficiency"

2012 ML 350 Bluetec
I have Bluetec and get about 25 city and 35 highway. Why are the EPA estimates so much lower than my experience?

Please do share your secrets. I can't get over 28 no matter how miserly I am with the pedal.
