Tire wear question

Hi folks,

I've been meaning to ask whether it is the front or the rear tires that wear faster on a '12 350 bluetec? In my case the front tires seem noticeably thinner and have a rounded edge compared to the rears. According to my dealer a tire rotation was performed 3 months ago as part of annual service. Since that time I've not driven more than perhaps 1.5k miles.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Front tires will wear quicker if the front end is out of alignment. Did they check the alignment?

No, they don't usually check alignment at these service checks. I'll ask about getting an alignment done.

Thanks,

Mark

Normally the front tires outside edges wear faster and the inside edges of the rear tires wear faster. The MB owners manual of the 14 GLK 250 BT recommends rotation @ 5,000 miles intervals.

Two further recommendations:

1. run app 3 psi higher than the recommended PSI, unless you have issues with the ride/handling, etc qualities. Adjust no lower than OEM recommendations.

2. buy an engineering caliper or even a cheapie tire depth gauge

Pressure? If your pressure is low the edges will round off very quickly also.

I'm running 36-37 psi on all corners; stock 19-in wheels. I should probably just rotate the tires and monitor wear more closely. If the front tires start wearing faster than the rears again, I'll know a problem exists.

The outside edges of my front tires were worn after 14k mi, turned out to be out of alignment. My service advisor said MB recommends an adjustment every 7500 mi. Sounds excessive to me.

THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME WITH K-MAC.

Ex-factory there is only front and rear Toe adjustment for virtually all Mercedes incl. SUV’s 163, 164, 166!

We saw the need for owners to be able to return vehicle to factory specs and were the very first company to manufacture precisely adjustable front Camber and Caster bushing kits.

The K-MAC patented design front kits replace the 4 main suspension bushes - the unique 2 axis/self aligning design also doubles the load bearing area thereby increasing wear life and also steering and braking response.

Similar design is used for the 4 main rear K-MAC bushings.

Result is precise single wrench front and rear (ongoing) adjustment to return vehicle to factory specs to improve traction, compensate for steering pull, costly inner edge tire wear through altering height, fitting wide profile tires, load carrying, curb-knock damage and with genuine K-MAC you also do not need to purchase special fitting tools.

Promotional offer MBWorld Members - Month of May FedEx freight $25 one kit or $35 Front and Rear. USA, Canada. Average delivery time 3/4 days.

2013 ml550 4matic , first set replaced at 27k 265/45/r20 with oem conti sport cross contact lx...now my rears are shot at 41k, (14k) fronts seem fine 1/2 tread left but rears are badddd, anybody else have horrible tire issues or switch to a different brand and not loose to much ride quality? Also do i really need to have my tranny flushed at 40k for $475 bucks? I don't think I'm going to do it plus i have their 125k extended warranty, Im just going to do oil change {A service} (and obviously order new rear tires) and be done but MY goodness this is turning into absurd amount of money on top of an 80k vehicle!

Can someone tell my why tires need to be rotated? When I got trained as mechanic in 1989 - 1992 (at Mercedes in Germany) , we never rotated the tires. I think it's just a way to make money and I feel it just makes the ride and tire wear worse when you rotate them because they are worn in (like jeans adjust to your butt) and then the rotation will mess it up.

I agree with you too. I have found no proof that rotating my tires will last longer then not rotating them. It creates more handling issues after rotations as the tires are trying to get used to their new position and makes the car ride worse. I avoid doing this on all cars and have kept my alignment in specs without any issues. I did have to rotate 1 time on this 2013 ML350 when the fronts were cupping but when I did, the car vibrated so badly above 70 mph that I decide to dump the Pirelli Scorpion Verde A/s and switched to the Michelin Latitude Tour HP for a smooth ride again.

Rotating tires may have made sense in the old rear-wheel-drive cars with much of the weight on the front tires. I think less so these days what with all-wheel drive and close to 50-50 weight distribution
